timing belt change

My 98 Mazda B-2500 has 97000 miles on it and runs great. It has the 2.5 liter and I was wondering at what mileage should I be concerned about timing belt failure. I don't have a owners manual to see when it should be changed. If it broke, would the valves get bent or do they all close to prevent damage? Thanks

100,000 is the recommended interval I believe.

The 2.3L/2.5L is a non-interference engine. If/when the belt breaks, the valves will not impact the pistons. Actually had a friend of mine who's a member here break his a while back, no damage to speak of. Replacing it...not fun though.

Remember to do other routine stuff when you are down there too. It would probably be a good time to replace the water pump (if it is under there), and anything else that looks like it should be replaced.

I sold my '99 ranger 2.5L with 131k and never replaced the belt. I wanted to change it at 100k but never got around to it.

had I kept the truck or wanted to sell it myself (I took the easy route and traded it in), I would have replaced the idlers(if any), oil pump, water pump, etc. I'm convinced that engine will last a loooong time and if you keep it or try to sell it someday yourself, you will be better off replacing any potential wear items.

good luck -jim
