My truck came with the "sport" steering wheel which seems a little small and 'un-trucklike' to me. Was the standard steering wheel larger and if not would a bumpside wheel be any larger and work on a '79?
The 78 to (I think) 86 steering wheels are the same. Anything before that is going to be a little bigger but wont work very well with your column. Im not sure how the regular steering wheels compare to the sport wheels.
The same Sport steering wheel (D7OZ-3600-A) that was used on F Series trucks, was also used on 1977/79: LTD II's, Mustangs, Granadas, T-Birds, Mavericks...basically everything passenger car except full sized Ford and Mercs. It's a desireable and hard to find steering wheel.
1978/79 F100/350: D8TZ-3600-B .. Steering Wheel 15" Diameter-Used with Power Steering, with or without Cruise Control.
D8TZ-3600-B was replaced by Ford with >>> E6UZ-3600-A, which fits ALL Econolines from 1978 thru 1988. So, the same steering wheel that fits 1978/79 F100/350's also fits Econolines from 1978/88.
The F Series steering wheels used after 1979 have part numbers that are in-compatible with the 1978/79 steering wheels. Will they fit? Dunno, but the horn pad is different.

The sport steering wheel is the one people seem to be looking for. I'm sure somebody would trade you. There's another Indy truck in my town that has the factory wheel that came with cruise control. I didn't take a tape to it or anything, but is sure seems bigger than the sport wheel.
