Dealer installed air conditioning

Let's beat the A/C issue into the ground a little more, shall we?

I have a 1973 F100 with dealer installed a/c, complete with the controls installed inconveniently smack dab in the middle of the dash (***** are vertical and located just to the left of the center vents). Now, my heater works just fine and dandy, but the a/c does absolutely nothing. My first guess would be the blower motor...is there a separate blower motor for the dealer installed a/c? I have the complete set of shop manuals, but I can't seem to find any information on the heater/air conditioning as separate systems. Thanks for your help!

I think the dealer installed a/c's do have their own blower. I think I saw some good info on it somewhere on this site - maybe it was in Mil1ion's info gallery or something?

I have a 79 f250 with add on A/C and it does have 2 blower motors. I belive the A/C blower is under the dash on the passenger side

I feel a bit retarded now, the blower motor was right there under the glove box. I checked the wires first and found someone had unplugged it. I plugged everything back together and tried it - it sounds like a garbage disposal (Yes, I even tried reverse rotation as well). After removing the fresh air vent housing, it looked like a simple removal. I removed the three screws that appeared to be holding the motor in place and...now I can spin it round and round but not bring it down. So it's obviously well attached to the cage (which is surrounded by large plastic housing with practically inaccessible screws). Other than dynamite or a sledgehammer, how do I get this thing out?

There are TWO different Ford dealer installed A/C units. One has a panel that runs across the dash and covers up the glove box. When this Deluxe unit was installed, it came with a hang on glove box.

The Economy dealer air uses a small rectangular control panel next to the radio. It has two A/C registers and two control ***** mounted horizontally.

If your A/C unit does not match either of these units, it's not Ford dealer installed A/C, but one sold by Sears, Climatic Air, Mark IV or ??

I don't rightly care who installed it - I want to remove the blower motor, replace it, and hopefully be on the right track to a working a/c system.

I do not remember exactly but when I had mine off I think you have to take the dash loose on the right side and pull it out a little to get more room to work

it sounds like you figured out your problem, kuzzins27.

used to install aftermarket AC's in everything...if anyone remembers ARA air conditioning you win a cookie. lol

You will have to seperate the blower assembly from the evaporator housing...then seperate the blower housing to take the squirrel cage off the motor shaft, then you can get the motor off...

you mention that it sounds rough...are you sure the motor bearings are the culprit and not something that might have gotten sucked up into the air intake?

I know from experience that a few leafs will make your AC sound like playing cards in the spokes of a bicycle.

Hope this helps a bit...

Dealer installed air conditioning

Kuz,
Have you taken the blower out? I have the dealer installed A/C and am also trying to take the blower out. It looks like db tanker is right, that you have to separate the blower housing from the evaparator housing. I am not sure exactly how to do this but am trying to figure it out. If you figure out can you please let me know. I will look at it again tomorrow. If I figure it out I will let you know.
Thanks,
Jason

I have the economy model dealer air in my 77 F250. The blower does come out. I took mine down several years ago. I can't really remember but I think the side vent plate has to come down with it. You really need to be a contortionist to get in there and get the screw out of the back. My blower was thrashing as well. When I finally got it down the darn thing was full of pine needles. (I lived in the mountains for the first 20 years that I owned the truck)

The blower motor removes easily from the bottom of the unit. Remove the heat door cover for more room to work in first. There are five screws holding it. The screw on top is not accessible from below. I finally cut it off with a hack saw blade inserted between the cover and the unit it's attached to. Then remove the three screws holding the blower motor to the air conditioning unit. On the Economy Unit, there is a plastic ring surrounding the blower motor. This retaining ring is flexible and can be popped off the housing unit. The blower motor will then be free to drop right out the bottom with the ring attached to it. This is true for the 1973 dealer installed unit but I don't know about the Deluxe unit.

Do you have dealer or factory A/C? Also, which engine?

I know this is an ancient thread, and this user is likely no longer around, but I pulled my dealer AC evaporator today, and found his sticker...

I pulled my dealer air out years ago and put in a under dash unit, a Sanden compressor, a parallel flow condenser and running a blend, The vents will blow air in the low 30's, That's the way an A/C should work,
