I have a 05 f250 6.0 with 3.73 gears and auto transmission. My question is when you are running empty and hit the tow haul button does your rpm change when going 70 or stay the same. Also does your transmission adjust for the weight you are pulling to keep it from shifting into the final gear.
The Tow/Haul mode does 2 things (primarily): Changes the shift points and holds the converter in lock-up for better down hill control. It does not change the gear ratios or selection. If you are taveling at 70 and press the button you will see no immediate change (I have done this many times). It will change when you start pulling or slowing enough to downshift. All gears (including overdrive) are still fully functional in T/H mode.
No problem. I think as you drive it, especially pulling, you will appriciate the transmission as much as the enging in these things. They seem to be a great match. Also, I don't know what you were told when you bought yours, but these are advertised as a 5 speed, but are really a 6 speed. During empty driving, it skips 4th gear. When you are pulling hard and it starts downshifting, it will then use 4th gear. It will raise the RPM 200-300 from 5th gear (they are pretty close in ratio) but it is enough to hold speed on almost any hill. In really cold weather, it will also use 4th gear and skip 5th. Not sure of the reasoning behind this one, but living in Southern Calif, I don't think I need to worry about that much...
With mine, if there is any load at all it will keep from shifting to 5th gear. I can hit TH button and allow it to shift to 5th gear, then hit it again and it will hold in 5th, but when a load situation occurrs I.E. grade etc, it will drop to 4th and hold there. In tow haul, it hold the lower gears longer before changing to higher gears.
Probably crappy fuel mileage, driving in 4th gear on the highway, but I suppose that if you are under a load it is less work for the engine if at higher rpms. Equating to longer engine/trans life in the long run.
I only use tow haul when towing, or when descending a substantial grade while empty, to save my brakes.

BTW Vipor, nice rims.
The first time I pulled the camper I had the utility trailer behind the 5th wheel loaded with 2 atv's and it seem that it never came out of 4th gear. The second time pulling I onlly had the 5th wheel and it would shift into 5th. Was there a reason why the truck would not shift into 5th or was it just doing what it is designed to do?
