i am doing the body work on my 86 ranger.i was told about useing the polyester primer.i was told it will self level over scratch's in the paint and place's that have not been feather'd out.also you don't have to take the old cracked paint all the way to metal.just da it with about 80 grit.any truth to this stuff.
Hes probably talking about Polyurethane. We use 2K at work and block sand it before using surfacer over it. You can put it over sanded paint, primer, fiberglass or putty.
i've heard it referred to as polyester too...like a bad suit.
A good fill primer would be 2k as stated above and will fill in up to 180 grit scratches or so...and it's compatible with urethane paints which are the best.
Polyester primer (featherfill for example)is a primer that uses the same type of hardener bodyfiller does. Basically sprayable bodyfiller. It will fill a lot more then other primers, but you need a gun that can handle spraying it. I haven't really used it. I don't know if I'd take too many shortcuts and leave old cracked paint, or bad featheredges cause of too many layers of paint ect(shortcuts usually get you know where and often come back to bite you), but it has a lot of fill, heard even fills 36 grit scratches. If you have a pretty wavy panel that needs a lot of blocksanding and fill, polyester is probably the one to use. Try searching on hotrodders.com for polyester primer, I know its been discussed a few times. Here is just one thread http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/poly...r+feather+fill

i'd seal the truck with epoxy primer before using any other primer. Give you a good solid base from which to work.
