[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Aug-02 AT 06:58 PM (EST)]The low tow ratings may also be the performance suspension that is definately NOT tuned to haul a load. A light, performance and handling suspension setup will kill a tow rating regardless of the HP and tourque ratings. Just look at the tow ratings of high performance mustangs and corvettes. There nothing. The low profile tires will also reduce a tow rating.
I would love to have a supercharger on my F350 Crew cab dually's 460 to tow my 7k lb trailer!
Dodge had the same problem with the Dakota R/T. They ended up buying a sh**load of them back from unhappy owners after they derated the towing and hauling capacity. Anytime you lower a truck, even if you do not soften the springs, you reduce it's towing and payload capacity.
I see, so the lowered ratings are because of the springs and wheel/tires. How come a lowered truck, even if the springs are the same strength, will lower the towing capacity?

Yes, that was me. I should have clarified a little...Vehicles like lets say a Chevro### Typhoon have a 0 tow rating. I think that is mostly due to all out sport suspention and being so low to the ground, all wheel drive, turbo, etc. I would guess super and turbos do add stress to the engine. Can't say how much for sure. But if you were to always stay below boost levels yourd be like stock, and with stock power of course. For relatively short trips I don't think it would hurt to use it on lighter loads.
