You can order the 347 directly from SVO if I remember correctly. 347's can give a lot of power, but longevity is sometimes an issue. For a good combo of power and reliability you can order a 331. For both of these however, if you are not running carburetion or Mass Air fuel injection, you'll run into problems with the computer getting confused as to why there is more air than there's supposed to be running past the O2 Sensor. It won't add enough gas and it'll run very badly.
have you ever heard the term match porting and if there is such a process is it something a beginner can do..and is it worth it..last question thoughts on castiron headers..i like the sleeper look.is there any true gain in headers
Matching the intake ports (head ports and intake manifold ports)isn't worth the work unless you've increased engine breathing capability with a change in cam or head work.
Dyno tests on big blocks, can't speak for small blocks, have shown zero hp gain with shorty or tri-y headers. Any seat of the pants or actual gains with shorty or tri-y headers come from people installing
dual or larger diameter pipe and/or less restrictive muffler(s)at the same time. Noise is a big mental factor in seat of the pants gains. Full tube headers with true duals (at least 2.5" plumbing) will provide substantual torque and hp gains.
You don't need mass air or a carb, you can just get a chip made for your speed density system for the 331. Much cheaper than a MAF conversion, and you still need a chip for the MAF.
Primary rig is Green Thunder:
95' F-150 XLT 4x4, 302, 5 spd, MSD 6A, Flowmaster American Thunder Exhaust, Sunroof, Clear corners w/ Diamond headlights, CD player with 2 10" subs and some 32" BFG Muds .
That's it for mods now, saving for a Stang. Check out my Gallery for a look-see.
So you've got the motor out to do a new bottom end, why not throw a 351W back in? engine mounts, transmission bolt pattern, heads, timing cover, cam, they all swap right over. Just get a new intake maninifold, and have the heads drilled for 1/2" head bolts, and you'll have a 3.5" stroke with bigger mains to support that extra stroke. I've never heard of a 347 going 40,000 miles, they usually die from excessive piston slap, destroying the block.
BTW, a 351 block can take a 4" stroke very well, making 393 ci of small block power!
