I take the train to work so I park my truck at the station. After work came back went to start it and nothing happened. All the guages and stereo work. Tried jumping it...nothing. Called AAA and tried "jumping" the starter....nothing. Has power just will not crank over. Did the whole turning on the headlights and try to start it and see if it flickers or dims....but they stayed bright. What else could this be? Never done this before. Thanks for the help guys!
Must be the day for this problem.
Same thing happened to me after using the truck for hours today. Multiple starts, stops and then .... Nothing.
Gauges good, lights good, just won't turn the starter over.
I even pulled out the book and checked a couple of fuses that might have had something to do with the starter, but nothing.
I assume it is the starter, or fuse, or a connection of some kind. But this was 100% working and then 0% working.
I was reading through the other search results for "won't start".
Sounds like a common problem.
The most common suggestion was to check for bad cables (corrosion) at the battery and at the starter.
I went out to check mine. It was too dark to do much, but I confirmed the battery cables were clean and then crawled under the truck to look at the starter.
Again it was too dark to see much, but assuming I was looking at the starter, I wiggled a cable connected directly underneath the starter and then decided I either needed a light or wait till daytime.
I went to check the truck again. The clock and radio was reset.... and it started.
Don't know if it will start tomorrow, but I have a idea that I know what the problem is (for me anyway).
Do a search on the forum, you will get some good results back as far as trying to determine the problem.
Thanks Oscar, ya it was totally weird. Working fine and then nothing. Going to crawl under there and take a look...just waiting till it gets a little cooler outside.
If any other ideas come up, please let me know. Thanks
checked all the wires and they looked good...thought maybe it could be the starter solenoid. So I bought a new one, and now I cant get it back into the starter. Same thing as the old one just wont go in. Ideas?
ive got a 1998 f150 with 4.6 that had a simular problem a few days ago. i started the truck to go to work and just as i went to leave the drive way it stalled. i tryed to start it but it did seem like it was getting fuel. i checked the plug wires and it had no spark. i than checked the fuses and one was blown. it was to the coil. tested the coils, they were fine. then i found the problem, it was a little radio capisator thing that is bolted to the coil. it takes the static out of the radio from the coil. i replaced both, cost me about $55 form local ford dealer.
STARTER RELAY
I had the same problem -- truck wouldn't even try to turn over. The starter relay is located on the passenger side firewall under the hood. VERY easy to replace and not expensive (OEM at dealer less than $50).
Do a search on "starter relay" for more information on replacement and symptoms.
i have a 97 f150, and constantly have starting problems. its never the battery connections being loose, or solenoids, or anything like that, my starter just needs to be replaced. it only lasts about 6 months on average, the starter, and when it dont work, i just bang on the starter while having someone turn the key, and it starts. but that only works for so long, until the starter is completely junk, then its time to replace it. if u get it at autozone, it has a lifetime warranty, and they will replace it for free each time it goes, it sucks, but thats my solution. replace the starter is a 10 min process, 3 bolts and a couple wire connections.
that is my solution to my starting problem, hopefully it will help anyone with starting difficulties
I worked on a 93 f150 with a manual trans that seemed like the relay was bad but it turned out to be the switch on the clutch pedal that broke.
My '88 F150s switch is worn to the point where if I don't smash the pedal into the carpet it won't crank...
My experience has been when the weather starts to get cold the ford starter solenoids don't like to engage the flywheel/ring gear. The starter whirrs but it doesn't crank the motor.
Replacing the solenoid is less expensive but sometimes replacing the starter is quicker, and then you get a warranty too!
