probably a stupid smoke question

But, when I stand on the accelerator, I get a little puff of smoke, until I get up in the RPM's, at about 2500 rpm, I suddenly get a huge belch of black smoke. I thought it was supposed to be the other way around. Is this normal?

Yes, from a standing start... Kinda... What happens is at the lower RPM you have exhaust flow at a speed, then when you romp on it, it takes a few seconds to get accelerated out the tail Pipe...

Now if your up to speed and all of a sudden your getting smoke then thats a different thing, but I dont think thats what you mean.

Nope, that is what I mean. I shift up through the gears, and get into fourth at about35-40 mph. then I stand on the pedal, and get a small amount of black smoke. As it speeds up, and the turbo spools up, it cleans up. after the rpms are up, that is when I get the cloud of smoke, as long as I stay on the go pedal. It's not quite at the redline, or the rev limiter.

any time you are cruising then stomp on the throttle you will get some black smoke..as long as it clears up in a short bit of time you are good to go..if it stays good and black the hole time your on the throttle then that's not so good..

With my predator there are times when in 5th gear mine keeps blowing a little smoke if I am on it hard. Its not all the time, pyro and boost are normal. I just figured it had soemthing to do with the air/air filter and isnt a big deal since it doesn't do it all the time.

And you've been WOT the whole time?
Sounds like loss of air volume to me for whatever reason. Wastegate suddently opening, clogged air filter, etc.

This sounds a lot like a truck i went for a ride in while in Denver this last week. He has a BullyDog chip, and a vented Wastegate line. But with his chip plugged in, his truck would smoke a bit, take off, get up to about 15psi, then all his boost would dump, and he would start smoking like a train. I had my AE hooked up to it to monitor some other stuff at the same time. When your truck starts smoking heavily, does it also fall on it's face power wise? Do you have gages? if so, what is your boost doing? Do you have a chip? if so, does this pattern happen when in stock, or with it removed?

No guages, this has been a very expensive year for the truck. I guess it does seem to lose power somewhat. I will be changing out the air filter soon, for the open element filter. Thanks everyone for the input, I forgot about the air filter. the restriction guage, however, hasn't moved. They aren't exactly accurate, though, are they?

Is it common for an older truck for the wastegate to open easier? I will have to search for ways to test/adjust that.

Thanks!
