My Differential has been oozing for a while, I'm gonna clean it up, and replace the oil. Which oil should I use? Should I buy the gasket from NAPA, or use the silicone gasket maker, and which kind? I searched my Chilton's, Haynes, and this forum, but still can't find a clear answer to these questions.
ALSO Don't use RTV or other types of gasket maker, especially if you have a Traction Lock diffy. Again contrary to other reply above, if you have a traction assist type differential, don't use plain gear oil either, without 1st ammending it with an additive, or just get an oil specified for Ford traction assisted set ups.

I used Mobil 1 gear oil (75W90) in my Traction-Lok differentials. It smells like it has the friction modifiers already. I didn't have to add anymore, and my diffs seem to be working fine. Most other gear oils do not have that characteristic smell, so I would plan on adding it separately. But if you have to pay for the gear oil and the friction modifier separately, you've almost paid the same as the Mobil 1 would cost, so why not just get the Mobil 1? It's a very good synthetic gear oil.
As far as sealing the rear cover, all the ones I've opened up seem to come from the factory with RTV sealant. If you're careful about applying the stuff, you can prevent formation of the beads on the inside of the case. After many thousands of hard running miles with this setup, I've never had any problems.
Happy 4th!!
Thanks for the help guys. I picked up a new gasket from NAPA; just from looking at it from underneath, it looks and feels like a gasket and not RTV, although there may be some used also, I'll find out when I open it up. The Chilton's says silicone/RTV, and doesn't mention a gasket. The door sticker tells me the axle code is 24, which is an "open" 7.5 axle. I could only find 80W90 gear oil (GL 5) so that's what I got. I don't need the friction modifier, right? I tried to find the Permatex 300, but no luck, I already had a new tube of red RTV, so I'll use a little of that.
Gotta get the grill fired up soon, and don't forget your Aerobeer.
Just to follow up on this thread, I got the differential sealed and refilled, no problems, no leaks. What I thought was a gasket was actually black RTV, which was a bear to clean off. I used the new gasket from NAPA ($4.00), with a little bead of the red RTV around the inner flange of the differential cover. After I installed the cover, I let it sit for a few hours before I refilled it with oil, just to let the RTV set up for a while. After a week, still looks good. I was hesitant to use the gasket instead of RTV, but it looks happy to me. Thanks for the help!
While doing a head gasket this weekend on one of my other cars. Sitting there with a putty knife carefully scraping out the burnt on RTV on the water outlet and cylinder head cover was so tedious.
