I am wondering if there is a way to take the cruise control system out of a '79 F150 and put it into my '78 F150. Also, would I have to use the stock steering wheel with the controls on it, or could I keep my aftermarket wheel?
It is possible and not too difficult if you have a complete donor truck. It would work best with the stock wheel. But if you're handy with circuits, you could build something that would imitate the controls on the stock wheel. The stock switches are not just switches. There are resistors involved as well. A wiring diagram will show the values of the resistors. I don't know if you could mount this on a custom wheel.
Do you really need to have the brake switch hooked up? I thought that just kicked the cruise off if the hazard lights come on. I figured the break in the vacumm line is really what made the cruise go off.
I am trying to do this switch also. My donar cruise has the amp. I think it is out of an 84.

Backup safety systems are by definition redundant. That doesn't mean that it is unnecessary. Just that it performs the same function as another component in the system.
It was also part of the design wiring allowing for the incorporation of cruise control into a Main harness as an option (also cost factor) for all models.
The Plug & Play concept with minimum changes.
They already have enough trouble with the elaborate Turn Signal Switch wiring that cause tons of problems
I just pulled a cruise setup from a 77 to put in a friends 76 before seeing the list. I did not know to get the brake booster and pedal if those are nessceary I guess I'll have to go back for them.
I got evrything else including the speedo cable and speed sensor wich was left off the list. I also pulled the steering colum and steering wheel. I'm wondering if the 76 steering column in the truck I am transplanting the cruise into is wired for the cruise or if I'll need the 77 column. Also the steering wheel from the 77 is very cracked, can I put the horn button with the cruise switches from the 77 onto the 76 steerng wheel? Thanks
