Its getting about that time again and I got to looking today at getting a new fuel filter with my first stop being NAPA. They looked at me funny and asked which type I wanted. Heck, I don't know. We went out and looked at the truck but none of them really looked the same as the old filter. They had a "standard" filter, a filter with a drain, and a filter with a drain and sensor. I told them I would think it over (not a bit NAPA brand fan). So I went down to Ford and they had motorcraft filters but didn't have one in stock. I questioned the 3 different filters that NAPA pulled up and the guy told me there was only one type listed for my model year. I agreed with him and asked how much. He told me, regular price they were $53.99! My jaw dropped a little bit...but the guy spoke up and said they were on sale for $29.99. That price still sounds a bit steep and NAPA didn't give me a price on their filters. So my question is what brand/price do some of you guys pay for your filter? If the $29.99 is reasonable in your opinions, I plan on picking it up in the morning....

Fuel filters are expensive, I pay about $40 CDN for my customized Racor Filters. They are about the same price as my Ford O.E.M. Filters. If you got good clean fuel they will last a long time so.
Thanks Seb. I was really in a twist there because I know from the past that parts from the dealership have always been more expensive than almost anything else. The fuel filter I have in the truck has been in there for quite a while and quite a few bottles of diesel clean have been cycling through it. Not a bad time to change it out hehe.
On a side note, I have to say I love my Ford even more after today. I had several newer Duramax diesel pickups come in to the shop for a fuel filter change. Man, those things are a @%#@$!! I had a heck of a time snaking the filters out of there. With the Ford, you unbolt, replace old filter, bolt on a new one in less than 10min and your out the door. Point proven why Ford is still the best...
i replaced the fuel filter on our `90 f450 last fall and it was about that same price, $28 or so. think it was a purolator or wix. napa's are generally wix. mine has the bottom where you screw on the drain and sensor mounting plate. new filter has the 2 new o-rings (bottom and top) with it. it is basiclly a spin on filter.
I have had to replace 2 aftermarket fuel filters due to the swage on the plastic that bottom cap portion that the drain plate screws on to would start leaking after a while.
I went and bought the Ford one, seams to be a bit heaver metal, and I hope lasts longer. The exta price is worth not having fuel p***ing out all over your hot engine!
Thanks for the replies everyone. From a few descriptions I figure that the NAPA guy was actually pulling up filters for the 6.9L. At the dealership I asked about it and they told me there was only 1 made for my 7.3L. Once I got ahold of the new Motorcraft filter, I noticed it had the right design on the bottom. None of the others at NAPA matched....at all. Actually a good thing that I passed and got one from the dealership. I also might just look into those Pureolator filters Dave for the next round of new filters.
I just got a fuel filter from napa yesterday for my 94 7.3idi. It was 30.69 and had the manual drain. When I went to repace it I realized that it didn't have the sensor or drain fitting. Went ahead and stuck it on and tucked the sensor out of the way.
