I just put in a 0lder possibly mid 70's 351W that came out of E150, I aligned the timing gears with the two dots facing each other. Put the engine in brought top dead center up by feeling for it in the plug hole with a piece of wire and then brought the rotor facing number one. The thing backfires like H#ll and doesn't seem right. Did the firing order change on the older motors, verses my 1986 F250, and could someone have put a 302 cam in it? I tried the firing order of the 302 and it yielded no results. Pleas help me get this sucker started. Also I haven't done a compression check maybe the valves aren't closing? Any help is greatly appreciated......

are you on the exhuast or compression stroke? remove the plug from the #1 cylinder, have someone give you a hand here. Put your finger over the plug hole and roll it over by hand until you feel pressure in the cylinder. use your wire to get close to TDC. check the distributor and see if it points to #1 wire. this will get you close.

You are 360 off. pull the distributor turn crank 360 and put distributor back in with rotor at #1. This will cure your problem.
