I'm going to buy a '95 or older Ranger to fix up. Since I want to end up with a 4 cylinder in it, I'm trying to find out what swaps from a v-6 to a four are the simplest. Can someone tell me if a four cylinder is a direct bolt-up swap to the bellhousing for the 2.8, 2.9, 3.0, and 4.0? If this topic has already been covered somewhere in this forum, please let me know where as I haven't been able to find it.
None of the transmissions interchange. If you get into the '80s, you can swap around bellhousings, but in the '90s all the bellhousings were intergral parts of the transmissions. This makes it a pain doing any sort of engine swap, as now not only do you need a 2.3L or 2.5L, you also need a transmission to fit the engine.
As Pablo said, the 2.3L and 2.5L share bellhousing bolt patterns, as they are really just the same engine. All 2.3Ls share the same bellhousing bolt patterns as well, new and old.
I've always liked inline engines and four cylinders suits me fine. When all my high school buddies were stuffing the biggest V-8 they could get into their old Chevies and Fords, I was messing around with four cylinder MG's, Triumphs, etc. Maybe its genetic. Maybe its because I can overhaul four cylinders a whole lot faster than six or eight. I don't have a clue why I prefer them, but I do, and whatever Ranger I get will end up with a four-banger if it doesn't have one to start with.
Not much of an answer for you but glad you asked. I enjoyed thinking about it.
There is one more hidden problem. Proppeler shafts and trannies lenth differ too. It is so funy to find yor prop. shaft too long ore too short ufter tranny swap and wat a fun to look for drive shaft that fits your truck om wrecked yard with measuring band......
Two things. First of all, you'll get a lot better response by making your own post on the board rather than tossing a reply in with somebody else's post. Everyone will see this, think it's a post 'bout engine swaps, and not see your question. Go to www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum35 and click "New Topic" at the top.
Second. Check out up top of your page. There should be a list of sponsors up there. Several are certified Ford parts dealers. Just refresh the page and check them out. Some offer FTE discounts as well.
