On every truck I have owned, I have removed my spare from under the bed. I can not stand rolling on the ground to get to the spare. (dirt, rain and mud) are a downer if you get a flat while on a date - I guess I could make HER get the spare! anyway my spares were mounted in the bed for easy access - My Bronco has the best location by far! - My point is - it would be a good idea for a trunk IN the bed. I know this is impractical for Ford to do, but it would be better. I would have the jack, wrench and tire in one spot, and it would be clean!
Just wishful thinking.
I hear all of you - Just get an AAA membership and call a tow truck .
I got the CAA membership (Canadian version of AAA) for the same reason. Supposedly ford is coming out with some werid looking mid-bed trunk doohicky thingy for 2008, maybe that'll be a good spot for the spare, if you buy an 08?
The spare under the bed of my '88 F150 came from the factory, and will probably stay there for as long as I own the truck. I also have a spare in the bed (I have lotsa spare wheels and tires that fit this truck laying around - I really should round them all up and do something with them all!) that I plan on putting on the truck if I ever have a flat.
My '96 Bronco has the spare mounted outside on a carrier. It has a cover on it, and I've never had it off, so I don't know how big a pain in the butt it would be to get it down.
Could always put it under the hood on top of the engine like Subaru did-
The bed box is out now- it's a contractor package, has been out since 2006. It's a short bed on a longbed frame, with an additional intermediate box.
An underfloor trunk are is great, until the truck loaded. Better hope your AAA membership is really up to date then.
My 72 expedition rig is going to have two spares, both standing upright inline with the truck, on the sides of the custom built bed.
But, there's not many other spaces you can throw a 39" tire and keep storage space in the bed.
Yeah, having them under the bed really is a pain. I used to have a Ranger that was like that, and the PO had chained and padlocked the tire in there; by the time I needed to get it out, the padlock was rusted closed! And who carries boltcutters with them on a daily basis?
There are a myriad of solutions to spare tire storage. Simply Google up "spare tire carrier" will yield lots of neat ideas. JC Whitney has some really inexpensive solutions.
I think the spare under the bed is an ideal place for it to be. It dosent get in the way, have to be moved around for different loads and such. I can get the spare out from under the bed of my truck and not get any dirtier than actually changing the tire itself. Changing the tire in the mud rain etc.... is a messy job anyway. I dont even have to leave my feet to get my spare out from under the bed, just winch it down, reach under to unhook it and drag it out. Change the tire and throw the old one in the bed to be fixed later.
