My brother in law is looking at a 7.3l Excursion. When he drove it the engine seemed fine, but the check engine light was on. They said he could not take the vehicle to a mechanic, but he could bring the mechanic to the dealership.
I know you would need to run the codes to find out exactly what the problem is, but is there something major that could cause this. He lives 60 miles away and does not have a mechanic that he know to go check the vehicle out.
What are the typical things that could cause the check engine light to come on?
We've both heard these engines are pretty rock solid, but he does not want to get in over his head.
That could be anything from a $10 sensor to a major repair. Without knowing the code, there's no way to tell. However, I'm not sure where you're at, but I would think that the dealership would have to fix a CEL before selling it. Hell, I made the dealer replace my sender & thermostat (always read cold, even though heat would work after a while) and passenger side-view mirror (wouldn't adjust left & right) before I agreed to buy mine.
I'd just tell them I'm interested in it, but they need to fix it before I even consider buying it...

i agree if the dealership would not repair the problem i would not buy from that place. if they want my hard earned money they can work for it to.[/QUOTE]
Not very pro dealer if they don't have OBDII reader ($90 Wally's) in the shop.
I'm not a dealer and I have a reader, hah, almost poetic.
If your BIL loves the X, take it to like AutoZone or PepBoys they can read the codes. Then the guys here can help telling what the codes means moneywise and your BIL can negoatiate the price down if he has to fix the X himself.
Thanks, I agree with above comments. He's decided to pass on this one. The dealer has it listed on EBAY. Said if reserve is not met they take it to auction. I didn't get the name of the dealership, but it is a Houston Cadilac dealer. I was suprised that they couldn't give the reason for the problem, or would not try and fix problem

Jep, maybe the problem is so bad that it'll take a lot of dough to fix.
Really sucking service.
