Brake Problems

My ol '87 has never had the greatest of brakes, but the during the past few weeks, they have gotten much worse. The peddle has always been "squishy", but now if I want to stop I have to pump my brakes to get them to brake instead of just slowing me down. What can I do to fix this?

You probably have to bleed them for sure.....(squishy)

And you probably have rear drum brakes with worn brake shoes, and possibly the self adjusters aren't working.

I bled them a month ago or so, and it helped a little, but not much.

Pull off the rear drums and see what you have left on the shoes and readjust.

had this problem in my 84, turned out to be a bad master and a bad wheel cylinder, check wheel cylinders first for leakage b4 tackling the master

I'd agree that you need to bleed them and your shoes are probly worn. Check your fluid level too.....If you are having to add fluid then you may have a wheel cylinder leaking some. You can usually look under the truck on the inside of the wheels and see the fluid if it is leaking.

Jack up the rear and pull the wheels and drums off and take a look at the shoes....you'll know then. If the drums come off real easy then your self adjusters probly aren't working. If the shoes are way down.....you need front too. The rears last 2-3 times as long as the fronts.

Good Luck
Bob

I think the adjuster is messed up, because today I made a turning stop that I knew was a little fast, but I had done it before at that speed. I mashed the peddle and it slowing, but not hard, then all of a sudden the back-driver side tire locked up. I got some new pads, going to take the brakes apart tomorrow to see whats up.

It isn't leaking any that I can tell, because it hasn't needed any fluid added to it.

When a rear wheel locks up most of the time the axle seal is leaking oil and it is getting on the shoes.

I wish that were always true bill.

Mine just lock up, cause i got good breaks. hehe.

I didn't see any bad info here.

Doubt its master though.
Your wheel cylinders in the back might need to be honed out. (doubt it)
its probably poor adjusters and pads all around.

make sure you bleed in correct order also.
And bleed the box on the frame, there is a bleeder valve on that also. under the master cylinder, sorta.

When i take my rear breaks apart, i throughly clean the adjusters and grease them with anti sieze. This helps them stay in operation as long as possible, without siezeing up. This makes a world of difference when you take them back off again.

Perhaps you should bleed till you get all new fluid in the lines also. old fluid could be causeing problems.

Remember start with the longest break line first. and work your way to the shortest.
