I apologize in advance if this has been covered and my feeble search skills have failed me. I have messed with this long enough and now seek the expertise available on this forum.
Truck: 1997 F150 4x4 XLT 4.6L Problem: My high beams are not working. Low beams and foglights are working correctly. Steps Taken: (not neccessarily in this order)
checked lamps = ok
replaced multifunction switch (also to fix the infamous wiper problems)
checked voltage to fuse 16 = 13 volts ok
checked fuse = missing?
fuse 16 was missing. I attempted to put in a new 20A fuse but it will not stay in the panel. Closer inspection reveals that while I can see pin 1, pin2 is no where in sight. I looks like this spot was never in use. Pin 1 is off to the right side instead of the space instead of in the bottom like all the other fuse spots.
My Ford service manual and my owners guide say that 16 is the correct fuse spot, but it looks like it was not meant to be used. I am at a loss on what to do next. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.
to begin with there is no fuse in the head lite circuit
only parking, turn, brake, ect.
if you have low beams then the head lite switch is working
next in line is the dimmer switch aka multi function switch
check for the hot from the headlite switch then thru the
dimmer switch part and out to either the high or low beams
check your plug connection and verify it is fully seated
The later trucks did have fuses in the headlight circuit. Usually two, one each lowbeam and one that feeds both highbeams. I don't have my diagrams with me to verify this on the 97 yet.

Thanks for the reply. There is a fuse in the engin bay, 30A, that covers both low and high beams. It checks out ok with my multimeter. The owners manual and the service manual say that #16 in the cab fuse box controls the high beams. That is the one that is missing.
I just replaced the multifunction switch today and I know the connections are good. Wipers, turn signals, hazards and the washer pump all work correctly. The high beams did not work with the oem switch either.
A little more description of what happens is maybe in order. If I have the low beams on and turn on the high beams, I have no headlights at all until I shut off the highs. If I run the low beams and foglights, they both shut off when the high beam switch is engaged.
I will put my meter on the high beam connector and the lamp switch in the dash and report back. However, I am very suspicious of that empty spot on my fuse panel.
Thanks for the assistance. That new picture make more sense.
Is it difficult to remove the fuse box? I cant seem to find the instructions in my service manual.
