So I took my truk to my truck to the tranny/clutch shop the other day because it has a slight grind sometimes from 2nd to 3rd and sometimes into 4th. I thought maybe it was the clutch or through out bearing. So the guy drove it around for a min and then played with the clutch pedal for a few min. He told me that he thinks my clutch is perfect. It releases fine, has plenty of grab. BUT the tranny he says needs help (93 f-150 5spd mazda) He said that the syncros? and some spring in there are bad.
Question #1 I the tranny just going to die on me or will i have time to drive it untill i find a ZF 5spd to drop in there.
#2 How hard is it to replace those parts, and are they really expensive? He said it would be about $1500.00 for him to do it.
#3 What years ZF will fit, or is it ever possible to swap from mp5spd to the ZF?
As to how long the current trans will last is anybodys guess. Chances are if it's a "slight grind" and only happens "sometimes" it will last for while longer depending on how and how much you drive. To repair synchros, he'll have to pull the trans and completely dissassemble it. While it's on the bench in a million pieces, it would be cost effective, and generally a good idea, to rebuild it at that point. (new synchros, bearings, gaskets etc) Judging by the estimate, I'm thinking that's what he has in mind.
Thank you verm much for the input. I will start looking for a replacement tranny. Would like to find a ZF. It is the more heavy duty tranny i believe. If I can find one that fits a 5.0 and yrs 91-94 I should be alright? right? I would assume that the tranny could be a direct swap, they are both hydrolic and was an option in those yrs. My buddys 92 with 5.0 had the ZF. I have found some reman ZF's for around $1200 dollars. Would this be a good buy? The only thing that really concerns me is the length of both trannys. would they be close to the same or would i need a new drive shaft. The B/W TC should bolt to both of them I hope as well.
I'm not real familiar with the ZF trans, so I can't say weather it would be a simple swap or not. I'm more familar with 3 and 4 speeds that came in GTO's, Chevelles, Impalas etc. I found a couple web sites that may have some useful information on a ZF swap; http://classicbroncos.com/ZF_Transmission_Swap.shtml
