Could you guys please tell me if I can install a new clutch in my 1978 F250 4x4 without tearing out my factory rubber floor? I know the shifter has to come off, but don't know if it can be done from below or not. Also is it common practice to remove the trans from the bell housing to remove it? Should I seperate the transfer case or pull it together with the trans? Sorry for multiple questions, just trying to form a game plan.
a)I don't like working upside down.
b)The tranny and T-case are HEAVY! and akward, unless you have a premium tranny jack.
c)Non A/C engine out in 90 mins. Total time start to brewski - 5 hrs +/-. The T-case alone with a helper took six R&R.
Unless you use Fordnut's way I dont see how you could avoid taking out the rubber floor in the cab of the truck. It's just something you have to do to get the transmission out. Also, everyone told me how heavy the transmission and transfer case was before I dropped my trans and I didnt listen. I thought ahh i've changed clutches before, I'm strong it wont be THAT heavy....WRONG!! Seriously make SURE you have a proper transmission lift.
Also while you're there you might want to check the rear main and possibly replace that as well. I did my clutch and decided not to replace it. Two weeks later guess what started leaking? It sucked.
