My friend has a 1990 F-250 with a 351 and a Zf 5spd. On his way back from out of town, the tranny started grinding in all gears. The noise goes away while accelerating, but is quite prevalent while maintaining speed and decelerating. The truck has 175k miles. I let him park it at my place since his roommate would freak out if he pulled the tranny at there place. Is this a pretty good indication of a tranny on it's last life. How hard are these to rebuild? We are both mechanically inclined, but neither of us has had to rebuild a tranny before. Any special tools we would need? What upsets my friend the most about this whole thing is that he just had the tranny out 2 months ago when he replaced the clutch.
does it have a vibration or just sounds bad does it accually grind while shifting gears
i just had the flywheel come loose on my van and if made kinda a grouwling sound and vibration that would go away when youd accelerate or just load the drivetrain but as soon as youd let off it would vibrate and finally it broke all 10 bolt that hold the flywheel on and i can atribute it to not putting locktight on the bolts when i installed a new clutch about 6 months ago so just an idea but it definitly could be a trans problem if not and yes ive read the zf is harder to rebiuld than the older 4spds but that doesnt mean you couldnt pull it off also is the truck 2 or 4wd if its 2wd you might just want to put a junk yard trans in it because at least local to me they seem to be poping up in junk yards like mad and for cheap but not the 4wd ones
Well that flywheel situation could be a little ray of hope for my buddy. He followed me to my house, and my truck has no mufflers and I still heard his tranny grinding while he was behind me. Every time he shifts, it sounds like he's not using the clutch at all and the truck jerks and bucks when taking off from a dead stop. It is 4wd. I think he's gonna pull it and see how much damage is done as to whether or not we try a rebuild or just get a new/used tranny. He just started school again so all his money just went towards tuition. At least he has 2 other cars and 3 motorcycles to drive for now, until he has to sell them for food and gas....or a tranny.
