PC Help/advise needed, please!
Out in the open/ not buried in a closet or the likes.
The cable modem and the router are sitting on top of the 'hutch' on my wife's desk, with plenty of space around them.
One of the nice things about the Linksys stuff is the ability to 'stack' the units.
I might have to make a set of spacers to get more room between the modem and router. There's only about 1/4" between them right now.
The modem and router are both 5 years old, so, it may just be 'time' to replace the router. (????????) Especially with the heat generated from them.
Some of the components may have gone 'south' due to the heat.
First go ahead and run the system restore as mentioned earlier. Chances are its going to set her back up the way it was prior to the IM install's. Just remember to pick a date prior to her downloading them.
If you did the restore and still can't connect to the net lickity split then:
Go to your control panal (Choose "Classic view" so you can see all the items there)
Click on "System"
Click on the "hardware" tab
Click on the "device manager"
This will open the list of devices on the wifes computer. Scroll down to "network adapters" and clik on the plus sign next to it.
highlight the ethernet adapter listed and then RIGHT click on it. Click on "update driver". The update wizard will appear and follow the instructions, if after running the wizard and if it reports the current driver is the best one, keep it and reboot the PC.
Run the lynksys software on her PC which should configuire it to the router.
Lets see what you come up with before going any further...
Brian
PS Unstacking the modem and router is a great idea. If that cant be done then give them some airflow between, 1/4" doesnt give much breathing room ;-) 2" would be better!
hold the reset button in for 5sec and then the factory settings will kick in after that through a hardwire connection type 192.168.1.1 in the browser (ie6, ie7, Firefox)and the default password should be: admin
if that don't work try a diff cat-5 port
I'm on my wife's PC at the moment. (The 'problem' PC.)
Here's what occured.
After posting last night, I went to Best Buy and bought another router.
It is a 'wireless G' Linksys router.
(I did not check back here before buying. Sorry guys! Call it impulsiveness.)
Anyway. . . I digress. . . .
The PC ran fine with a direct connection to the modem.
The problems came when connected to the router.
I was able to connect two different laptops to the 'net using the CAT-5 cable that was connected to the problem PC's NIC card.
Here is where I need to correct myself. I was only connected to the modem when this occured. I re-traced my steps. I wasn't connected to the router.
(I'll take my 40 lashes with the whip later!)
Final results. . . .
New Linksys "G" wireless router.
New CAT-5 cable from modem to router.
New CAT-5 cable from router to PC's NIC card.
New wireless "G" router configured and operating. (Both hard-wired and wireless!)
Ultimate bottom line . . . .
THANK YOU to everyone that responded!!!
FTE is the Number One site on the 'net!
Again. . . Thank you!!!!!!
Keith
