The factory trans temp gauge is a glorified idiot light showing low, normal, and high (high being way too late, BTW). Think of it as a three position switch -- "normal" is anything in a huge range of numbers. You'll need all three at a minimum.

Joe is right about the tranny temp gauge. My pillar tranny gauge moves all over the place while the dash gauge always stays right in the same spot no matter the conditions. By the time your dash gauge shows that your tranny is too hot it will be too late.

My Autometer gauges have never given my any trouble although I have been thinking about swapping them out for some other type. Haven't made up my mind which ones yet.
