It's all about looks, style and persona. It's like adding ground effects and wings to a Dodge Neon.
Most of the lifted trucks you see (especially in So. Cal.) do not see any off road driving, unless the parking lot at Starbucks is being torn up.
ummm... Lots and Lots of people in So. Cal use their lifted trucks for off road driving. We have fantastic terrain out here. Mountains, desert, beaches, and a stone's throw from BAJA.. Most people I know with lifted trucks out here, use them to get their moto's and atv's, etc. to the local spots.
So if we're going to go there, How many people in the US lift their trucks because they need the additional ground clearance?? .01%

Sure, but that's the crowd you hang with. I grew up on the west coast, I know what's out there.
I do not mean any disrespect for anyone in So. Cal. (or anywhere) who uses a lifted truck like it should be used, but you know as well as I do that a lot of lifted trucks do not see any dirt. The biggest hill they will see is I-5 over the grapevine.
i agree with tnt...just because you dont think its right or you think it is stupid makes it wrong for what reason....they make the payment not you...im sure there are things in your decisions that i would think were stupid but i would never ask WHY....its your decision...let me ask you a question...why do you really care what other people are doing on THEIR trucks...i asked a question about my truck and you chimed in with close to the same irogant response...sor the answer to you question is becasue they want to and are secure enough with themselves that they dont care what others think about there trucks!!!

I think we're mixing up two different issues here:
1) People who take a vehicle and "rebadge it" to make it look like something else.
2) People who put performance mods on their vehicles who are never going to use the perfromance.
-- I agree with all of you on the badging issue. I actually like the way the Europeans roll, they de-badge a lot of their cars to make em more stealth..
-- As far as the performance mods, yeah, some people do it just for looks.. I don't understand people who buy Porsches, Corvettes, etc. and don't take em to the track. And why do people lower the suspension on sports cars that will only be used in the street?? -- Well, some people just prefer the way performance enhanced vehicles look, be it dropped, lifted, added aero kits, etc. - That doesn't bother me. To each their own. Be it an on road or off road vehicle... Just don't try to impress me by presenting fake badges.. I'd be more impressed if you just enjoyed what ever vehicle it is that your driving.
The reason I Re-badge my ATV was to get some laughs and looks, And it has done just that. Countless times on the trail people have asked if it really has a diesel in it, And i always say yes! I also re-badge my John-Deere lawn tractor with CAT DIESEL badges.
The first time I ever saw a re-badge job was on the original "Big Foot" monster truck. It said F1000. I thought it was cool. I was 15 yrs old.
Years later after my brother totaled my 5.0 Mustang LX, and I had to buy a Ford Festivia to get around, I took the 5.0 badge off my scrap Mustang and put 0.5 (5.0 reversed)on my Festivia. The folks that noticed it would laugh and ask if it was real.
I thought it would be funny
I guess people rebadge for the same reason they change anything cosmetic, for looks.

its funny cuz i live in so cal and i see this every where. and its sad cuz its a nice truck and gets screwed and for some reason ppl love it. I mean i like lifted trucks, just not 20" and just for looks. Some of them are not that bad, but i think it has just got a bad rep from So Cal from all these kids getting lifted trucks and driveing them to work at del taco.
Im more of a Prerunner kind of guy. I wouldnt cut and bow the bed on my daily driver but when i get the money and a new truck i would deffenitly make my self a nice project prerunner truck. ofc it would be 100% off road use. thiers no good dunes on the freeway...
