High CO Emissions Test
The motorhome (1990 F53 chassis) with a 460 engine FAILED CO% during the high RPM test. The at idle HC was 85 ppm (limit 300 ppm) and CO% was 0.9 (limit 2.0); at high speed (2500 rpm) the HC was 70 ppm (limit 300) and the CO% was 3.16 (limit 2.0). The technician suggested the O2 sensor (HEGO?) as the problem. The cost would be about $100 to replace. Before I just buy that sensor, has anyone had this problem or have any ideas what could cause this problem like timing, wires, other sensor, etc before sinking the $100.

It is not a bad starting point for the sensor to be replaced, because it is a maintence item. Check to make sure that the airfilter is in good condition, and that the EGR valve is opeing correctly with out bad vacuum lines. If it fails again, it may require a new cat, but that is a little more work.
