painting wheels

I hate hubcaps, so i took the ones off of my 89 f-250 to find them somewhat rusted. I cant afford new wheels and i dont want to put those stupid caps back on so im thinkin about painting the wheels. Anyone ever do this? I was thinking a couple coats of rust-oleum primer then a bunch of clearcoat. Do you guys think this will last? Any other ideas? Or should i just not do it at all?

Wire brush and sand the rust as best you can first......You can make them any color you want.......I've used both Rustoleum and the Wheel/Rim paint from the auto parts stores. Hardest part was masking the tires off. If you take your time and mask them good you can paint the rims right on the truck. It's easier to take it off and lay it down for getting good coverage all the way around though. Last set I did I made a Metallic red to match the truck.

Good Luck and Have Fun

I would use my handy dandy "speed blaster" once again but first would have my tires dismounted being sure to mark the position well... 2 reasons for this... wouldn't want to bump the tire with wire wheel grinder or sand blaster just to be safe and secondly and also crucial to good prep it would allow me to have my paint layer all the way into the bead to resist chipping.
I would use an enamel and would bake in the oven at 175 degrees for a couple hours each too... I painted for a weld shop and we baked everything, made the stuff very durable! And it can help to smooth them if put in the oven when quite raw. The paint we used was Benjamin Moore "INDUSTRIAL" enamel it did not require baking and nothing on the label suggested it but the results were much better.
Then I would make sure the tire shop that is going to remount and balance them is capable of NO TOUCH mounting as is used on them high dollar wheels kids are so fond of nowadays... If I wasn't going that extreme a quick scuffing and a wipe down with vinegar to remove silicone followed by prep-sol to remove grease and oil using a cardboard mask stencil over tires and wipe and paint off them with a quick laquer thinner or other product.
But I won't do this again I prefer to treat them to the same prep or more as bodies get since they are in a severe life...
