Oil leak

Well I have elimated almost every leak on my 84 2.8 that I can handle without any assistance. Now I come to you all asking for some advice. my bronco has latley begun to leak oil from right at the front of the motor right under the crankshaft pulley. Im not sure if its the oil pan gasket leaking or a crankshaft seal of some kind. I have no idea. and I dont want to pull it all apart and put it together without getting the problem fixed. It drips a fair amount about a quart every 2 weeks I would say. I just want some advice as to what seal might be leaking.

Thank you

spray the front down good with a can of GUNK engine degreaser..let it sit for about 20 mins then hose it off or use a pressure washer if you have one..
let it dry out..then what i do is spray the area with white or yellow paint..let that dry then run the vehicle for a little and then find out right where the leak is.

I believe i had that problem once, Long time ago. Cleaned the area with some degreaser and brake cleaner. Put a little high temp gasket sealer over it. FIXED.

The front crank seal / timing cover seal on the 2.8 and 2.9 are problem areas, moreso the crank seal, along with the rear main seal and the oil pan gasket, and, of course the notorious valve cover gaskets. You can clean the area and then run it and look for the leak as previously mentioned, but more than likely it's the pan gasket or the crank seal -- and if you have replaced or repaired the pan gasket already, then it's a good idea to replace the front crank and timing gasket/seal. The cause of the issue, though, is either one of two things: The vehicle has sat too long between being run fairly often and the seals and gaskets dried out, you have some wear on the bearings that are causing the crank to move around a little and it's eaten up the seals, OR the crank itself has something at the seal on it that is eating the seals or it has wear that is causing the seal not to seal. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, I believe the main crankcase seal dried out when I was down in California because in my mechanical infancy I was working on my carb about 2 years ago and I left the fuel line unplugged over night and by morning there was fuel all over the front of the motor. So I have a feeling this with the desert heat just dried it out and caused a crack. The truck was in California for most of its life and the Palm Springs heat destroys any kind of seal. I wanna do this all myself but it just seams like such a pain to do the oil pan gasket, the front crank seal not so much but a bit of work. Anyone have advice on how to get the front crankcase seal out?

If it's like the 2.9, it's in the timing cover. To get to it, you will have to remove all the belts at the very least, remove the crank pulley / harmonic balancer, then remove the cover, as if I'm not mistaken, they are removed and installed from the inside. If you don't have a Haynes or Chilton's, check autozone.com's repair guides for a more precise procedure -- it may be under engine overhaul / rebuilding, I don't remember. As far as the oil pan gasket, you have to remove the starter to get to all of the bolts, and, of course, drain all the oil out prior to removing the pan, if you're going to replace that as well.
