ABS Sensor

The ABS light on my dash comes on when I start the truck in the morning to go to work. After I drive about five miles I turn the truck off for about ten minutes while I get a cup of coffee. When I start the truck again the light goes out it has been doing this for over a year.I took out the sensor and cleaned it no difference. It only does this when it sits idle for a few hours.

Welcome to the site mtntop1....give us a little more info...year, engine and model.
Does the light flash at all, or is it steady on?

try bleeding your brakes and making the sure the rear drums are adjusted correctly. worked for me when I had the same problem.

could be bad brake sensor on the mastercylinder or proportioning valve. but do like bustedflush said first, it could just be a fluid or brake adjustment problem.

I am trying to understand what a brake bleed will do since the sensor is mounted on top of the center section or the rear end and all it does is sense the spinning of the ring gear and when it stops abruptly that is activates the ABS.

the vss sensor in the axle also controls your speedo and cruise, if you aren't having problems with those then it will be in the brake lines or sensors for the brakes

I don't have any sensors at the brakes and the only sensor on the master cyl. it the brake pressure switch for the cruise control. There are no sensors at the wheels.I adjusted the rear brakes and bled still the like comes on when after sitting for a few hours but when I drive about five miles turn the engine off then on again the light goes off.

It looks like the sensor on my proportioning valve is built into the valve. There is no way to remove the sensor.

Trace the wire bake from the differential - you might be getting an occasional ground from a wire that is frayed. The sensor on the proportioning valve will cause the light to come on if the valve is faulty or the pressure in the front and back brakes is unequal- usually caused by air in the lines, excessively worn rear brakes, or misadjusted brakes. From what I understand the proportioning valve on these trucks is a fairly common failure. The is a process for resetting it - I would have to go look it it - let us know.
