Surging

I have an 04 6.0 with just over 16000 miles now. don't drive it every day and never use it to tow or for work. truck has the mods listed in the signature including the SCT with matt's tunes. I also use Standyne in each fill up. I noticed the turbo surging the last 2 times i've driven the truck. It's only lasted a couple of seconds each time but it also seems to be when i'm traveling down the road at about 30 - 35 at a constant speed. You can hear the turbo spool up and down a couple times then it stops. The CEL has not come on and as far as i know the EGR is disabled by the SCT. Any idea what is causing this or how i can fix the problem? thanks in advance.

My guess...the variable vanes are sticking in the turbo...due to lack of use. You really need to drive this diesel. You are not enhancing it's longevity by not driving it.

Believe me i try to drive it and usually drive it hard when i do. I have a work car that i drive everyday and i've not been driving the truck as hard because i've noticed the fuel mileage drop from 15 to around 10. I was getting 6 with my 04 F250 V10 so i'm still ahead of the game.

Thanks for the reply..and yes crack is good!!

An awesome looking truck you have I might add.

These vanes are notorious for sticking when not used. However, I believe there is a fix or at least some relief available. Hopefully one of the Techs will see this and give some ideas.

I would guess vanes as well. 16k is nothing. If I were in this situation I would take my truck out and and floor it from a dead stop numerous times to try and get those vanes to get completely closed. If it doesn't work you can request your turbo be cleaned of rust/carbon by the dealer and a tech that has done a few could have it done in under two hours. It's really not that big of a project so don't let a s/a or s/m worry you into thinking other wise. good luck.

I second on the turbo sticking because of it being the 03-04 version which were notorious for turbo "rotting" and in particular your very low mileage.

I had 89,000km last year on my 03 that needed turbo replacing under warranty with similar symptons.

Ford told me to DRIVE my truck like I stold it time to time. If I drove my truck any harder I would be spending my money on tires and unnessary fuel. Seems contrary to what the EGR system is suppose to do and really unessary if Ford worked out the bugs properly before release.

Nice truck. You Darcey715 and I have very similar black trucks. I am still learning the ropes here on this forum. One of these days I will include a picture of my truck in my gallery.

I called a dealer close by yesterday just to feel them out and ask about maybe bringing the truck in for service. I totally forgot i know the service manager there. He told me the same thing...try getting on it before i bring it in and try not to let it idle. Best part is....there's no warrany problems with the mods listed and he even told me that if i had a cold air intake it wouldn't be a problem..only thing that came up was don't have the programmer on it when it comes in....i can handle that. What a relief to find someone who owns a diesel and works on them and agrees that you should have some SOP fun while driving.
