I have a good friend with a 1997 F150 with the 4.6 and an automatic trans in it...he is pushing the 200k mile mark and he wants to know how he can get more MPG without affecting the longevity of the truck... it has not lost any power since the day he bought it and he wants to keep it that way... so are there any things he can do to make it run even better and/or allow him to gain some MPG's without costing much? And what are your all's thoughts on him switching to synthetic oil?
im suprised it only took him till 200k to realize the truck gets bad mpg.....tell em to put a k and n filter and a cover for the bed that will give em 2 more mpg.
Well its more the fact he never told me anything till now LOL He doesn't really care that much about MPG but I figured I would try and help him... Anything on synthetics?
Oh and I forgot, his front end squeaks like crazy, he said he had the front enf rebuilt 2 times and it fixed it for a while and now it squeaks again...it is only when he turns and its the turning motion that does it, kinda like its some bushing in the steering but I don't know which ones it is or how to permanently solve this??

To cure the squeeking front end, get a grease gun with a needle attachment. Get on a creeper and get under the truck and look for the steering box and the pitman arm. You will see a rubber bushing where the pitman arm connects to the steering linkage. Stick the needle in the bushing and pump it full of grease. There is another rubber bushing on the passenger side as well (you can see it from the first location)...go ahead and grease that one up too. I just did this on mine, and I havent heard the slightest squeak in 3K miles since I greased them.
To get more power from the truck, Go with a Volant or....(I forgot the name of the other manufacturer) cold air intake. They are the only ones that are a true COLD air intake, and draw the air from the fenderwell. A programmer, and at lease a cat-back exhause are also great ideas.
Also, if the tranny hasnt been touched, a shift kit would be another great idea to keep it going longer.
As far as switching to synthetic oil I wouldnt recommend it with that many miles on the truck. You might be ok but you might have a big problem with seals leaking.
ive also found that with the price of gas, my truck now gets better mpg, a tank lasts about 3 weeks now , i wonder if it has anything to do with my truck sitting in the garage more often then not....ha ha
Well I greased everything up and it is still squeaking...he says that there are plastic ball joints on it which have rubber boots over them..how do I get the hose clamp thing off the ball joint boot, and where do I lube and what with?
