Just recently my '99 F150 4.6L Romeo has been having an odd odor. It basically smells like fish...nasty! I later noticed some type of leak coming down my exhaust while I was changing my fuel filter. The fluid was a cream/yellowish color with the same odor. I trailed it to some type of plug under a black cover that can only be seen from the passenger wheel well. I thought it was a/c coolant and figured it would run out and I would fix it later.
Then it started blowing smoke through the air vents(on or off). After driving about 7 hours, I noticed the temp gauge would go up at red lights and stop-and-go traffic. I brought it back home and replaced the thermostat and cleaned the housing which had the fishy odor to it. I added engine coolant, and am checking it periodically.
My questions are: Does anyone know what the "plug" under the cover is? What can I do to stop this leak? Why would the engine coolant smell fishy? How can I stop the smoke coming through the vents?
Thank you in advance to any advice. I am currently considering taking it to a dealership. If you know me, you would know I can't stand anyone else to touch MY truck!
Sounds like your heater core is leaking and anti-freeze mixed with condensation from the a/c evaporator is running from the evaproator case drain and on to the exhaust.
