One five speed, two different versions.
S 42 or S 47.
Three possible different gear ratios in each version.

The ID tag if it is still there is on the drivers side.
Look in the shifter area about 1/2 way up the side of the transmission for the tag.

Any chance you have the gear ratios on hand for both versions?

Thank you very much Dave. Looked at the tags and it seems I have the S-47 model. Hopefully it will match up alright with the 3.55 ring and pinion I have on order

I have a zf s5-42 with 4.14, 2.37, 1.42, 1, .77. Acording to my ford service book that is the only option that ford used for the diesels until the s5-47 came out. The gas version is the 5.72 first gear.

The starter and flywheel will work with both motors. The flywheels and clutch tend to follow the trans., so use the one from the zf.

tested the 6.9 used ether on it not good! at the worst i think i blew the head gaskets hope fully that is all. any way going to pull it apart and check all the clearance's. does any one know how much a 86 6.9 weighs? so i can build a engine stand strong enough to hold it. will a 7.3 injection pump fit it? I'm thinking i want to use as much of the 89 7.3 parts as possible like the 7.3 glow plugs and pump and injectors that way I'm not changing the wiring on the truck.
thanks j
