Does anyone have experience using a nonstock radiator? I would like to find something lighter, but that will not bust the bank. Aluminum universal perhaps?
Recently I tore down a Mitsubishi pickup and was even thinking of using its cooler. Figured it could be made to fit, but gave that up because it was just rediculously small.
My main objectives are decreased weight, while maintaining adequate cooling. The current new core 4 row stock radiator weighs a bunch, and cools too much.
A new 292 V-8 motor is ready for installation this winter, and the timing would be good for changing the radiator.
The Griffin radiator shown in the link looks like it would be difficult or impossible to weld on the bracket needed to match up to the 46 radiator mount.
Just to toss out a little more info - the 46 uses the same radiator as the 48-52's so it expands your search a little more. I have swapped a 46 and 48 rad back and forth in my F1 several times.
Sometime back I seem to remember a thread about using a dodge rad. Can't remember tho what they used? Sorry.

Had a guy in Cali build a "stock" rad for my 46....4 core unit that i can't get over 200 deg in August with the air on. This is with a warmed over 302. Bolts in the stock location.

That is what I have, a stock 46 4 row, new core, cooling a 292. At 15-65 mph the coolant temperature never gets above 160, with ambient up to 100, and that is with the electric fan off. I know it is hard to believe, and most guys wont. No air conditioning.

Yep....mine is about the same way, unless it's really hot truck runs at about 165-170. With a 195 t-stat. I understand about the radiator being heavy, but i LIKE a dead nuts reliable cooling system. Doing a 3g alt/Taurus fan conversion now. The only issue i had is in traffic, with the air on, the temp would creep, due to a waaaay too small cooling fan.
