Our 2004 E-150 5.4l has developed a problem which I think is probably a bad clock spring. Brother in law uses this van for our business, but that is beside the point. Last week the van totally shut down, reset everything, such as clock, radio, trip meter, etc. Shortly after this the cruise control and horn quit working, and the air bag light is flashing. Van was in an accident with front end damage about 1 1/2 years ago. Spun the truck on the highway tagging all four corners on guard rails ($16K damage). Bag did not deploy. One mech bil took it to seemed to think that could be a factor in this problem. Said Ford vans typically have clock springs go bad after sustaining front end damage.
If it is the clock spring, is it a bear to replace, or should we just bite the bullet and have it repaired by Ford? Part price isn't too bad in itself. My major concern is the removal/replacement of the air bag. Any special tools required?
Replacing a clock-spring isn't too bad and that sounds like part of your problem. What I would do first though is have the airbag codes scanned just to make sure it is a bad clock-spring and not something else. I'd do that first.
clock spring on my 94 E150 was pretty easy - but be careful when you remove the airbag, even with power off and battery disconnected it can still deploy.
As Moore558 stated check for codes first, a bad clockspring should cause a code and in my case it flashed the airbag light.
