We have a 2005 Ford Motorhome with the V-10 engine and it only has 6000 miles on it left out yesterday from Waco, Texas on our way to New York to visit the family and the thing ran fine up until we got to Monroe, Louisiana and we had around 1/4 tank of gas left and it started hesitating real bad under acceleration going down the interstate. You could back off the throttle a touch and it would run fine but as soon as you got back in to the throttle it did it again. Stopped went to top off the tank and there was so much pressure/suction on the gas cap it wasn't even funny. Filled it back up and made it to Vicksburg,MS barely going 45mph. Stopped in to an Advanced Auto Parts and one of their guys put a diagnostic tester on it and the thing read where two of the plugs were not firing. What would cause this or could it be something else. We have not driven the thing since April when we went to the races. please if someone could help me as we are currently stuck in Vicksburg until Monday morning to hopefully try and get in to the Ford Dealership to see if they can get this straightened out for us. Thanks in advance and sorry if this post is in the wrong forum. Scott
Sorry to hear your problems! I do not think the two plugs not firing would cuase your issues at least not on a V10 it would be a bad miss but would run "O-Kay". If it has been sitting for a while the you ran it low on fuel in the tank, I would look at changing the fuel filter. You sound like you have the classic symptoms of a glogged fuel filter.
I agree , old gas , very wet Spring , probably water in the tank bottom. Have you tried any gas tank treatment ? Change out the filter & treat the tank with some Gas line dryer in a can .
Let us know how it turns out .
I would lean towards fuel filter...just as the others have suggested. Regarding the two cylinders not firing...that could be the COP (coil on plugs)...or two fuel injectors plugged.
Either way...the dealership should have you in...and out in a few hours. Good luck...
If there is crazy vacuum in the fuel tank there may be something wrong with the fuel vapor "controls" or fuel cap. Since this is a motorhome, the problem may be due to something the RV manufacturer did to the chassie.
It would be nice if a locale member is close by and can help them out. That's what makes FTE so Great. Keep us updated on the repairs and the trip. Try to make the best of the bad times, And they don't seem so bad.
Odd that you'd get vacuum from the tank. Something must be amiss in the vapor recovery but that should set the check engine light since it is emissions related.
I say try to drive with the fuel cap off and see what happens. Your engine may not be getting fuel because the pressure inside cannot equalize creating a fuel starving problem.
Neither a bad pump, clogged filter or bad COP would create the vacuum in the tank he described. A vent line could easily be kinked, disconnected, clogged or something.
The original poster also didn't state if his Check Engine light was on...odd that it wouldn't be but since those guys scanned it surely there would be more "codes" than the non-firing sparkplugs. (Sounds like they were just trying to get a little money from the guy, if you ask me.)
This could be a simple as a bad gas cap. One that won't vent or let air in to equalize.
