Escape Transmissions

Has anyone heard that the transmissions in the Escape are only 'built to last' 75,000-90,000 miles? Mine went out right at 90,000 miles and in calling around for estimates I found out that's the norm! What's up with this type of transmission? I've contacted Ford and they don't understand why I'm upset. What happened to the sloan 'Built Ford Tough'? I did research on my car prior to buying and heard nothing about this. I was learning toward buying a Hybrid but not now. I love my Escape and I'm very disappointed that Ford can't build a better product.

I drive one for a company vehicle and the two I've had have been fine, but a coworker in Colorado has lost 3 trannies that I know of. He told me that he was told they are a throw away tranny and that the stress he puta on them driving in the mountains wears them out quicker.

what year is yours ?, some years seem to be worse than others in terms of reliability. I never heard that story before, but automatic transmissions can't last forever, there would be a difinite life expectancy to these trannies, I would think somewhere around 100,000-200,000 miles would be the acceptable range. , 90,000 is a bit early IMO. Did you change the fluid on a regular basis ?

New user, zero knowledge, most likely wasting your time, but curious. So, if I get the protocals or site manners wrong, please correct me. In general, how do I tell If someone is talking about a manual or automatic transmissions? What year is your Escape, Hambergerpatty? You can tell by your VIN where the trans was made. Where was it made?

My Escape is a 2002 and has the automatic transmission. I don't drive over mountains and have only used it a handful of times engaged in 4 wheel drive. The only thing I can honestly say is I haven't been faithful in changing the fluid. I would have expected the tranny to last many more thousands of miles. I didn't allow Ford to replace it. The transmission shop that replaced it beefed it up (something with the sleeves) so hopefully I'll get rid of it before it blows again.

Thanks for the input.

What tranny fuild have you been putting into it when you change it and how many miles between tranny fuild changes? I put 120,000 miles on my ex's 2001 Escape XLT with the auto and never had a single problem with the tranny. In fact she is still driving it without a problem. On the Escape you should change the tranny fuild every 25,000-30,000 miles.

Frankly, changing the fluid is the only maintenance you can do on that transmission. Many do a partial dump and fill every or every other oill change. I did a complete fluid transfer at 30,000. I've read very few problems from people who aggressively maintained their transmissions.

My 2002 has 125,000 miles on it and it works fine. I just returned from a 1000 mile vacation pulling a 2500 lb. boat the entire way. No problems, but I change the fluid every 30,000 miles.
