How the chip works?

Am I correct in that the superchip changes the firing timing to utilise premium fuel?

I think these efi engines are set up to run as lean as possible. Are there chips out there that make the engine run more rich but still on regular gas? Maybe they trick the computer into thinking its a cold start or something?

Daywalker: The only manufacturer that I know of that attempts to trick the ecu into thinking that the engine is running cold is Hypertech. This is why they suggest that you purchase their cooler thermostat with their product. Diablo and Superchip both change the timing curve and advance the timing quite a bit for premium fuel. This is why you get a pinging problem with regular fuel, the timing.
Thanks

You don't need an expensive chip to make the computer think it's colder, a few $.25 resistors from radio shack will do the same thing. Check it out here: http://rogueperformance.com/IntakeAir.html while you're there check out some other stuff too, some looks pretty interesting.

How the chip works?

Dave: Read the above,,,Superchip and Diablo DO NOT try to trick the ecu into thinking the car is running cold. That would be an inefficient way to try to gain horsepower. When cold, the ecu raises the duty rate on the injectors, thereby adding fuel. It does not, however, adjust the timing proportionately. The 2 above mentioned chips alter the timing curve, changes the air/fuel ratio, and advances the entire timing curve, raises the rev limiter, raises the speed limiter, raises the fluid pressure in the autos. That is a bit more than a couple of resisters can do.

How the chip works?

Not to mention the fact that keeping the engine running in a "choked" overly rich condition is probably against emissions laws.....
