Another a/c question

I have a 98 4.6, automatic, 4x4, extended cab with 60,000 miles. The a/c is not blowing cold air. I noticed that the a/c clutch cycles on and off. Is this normal, and if so how long should it stay on and off when the a/c is on?
Thanks

It should stay on for quite a while. If it is short cycling, then it is probably low on freon. If it is cycling every 5 to 10 seconds, then it is low.

Im guessing that its not a fuse or a relay if its short cycling.

if it cycles then you are o.k. electrical--------- with the proper amount of R134 inside, it will not cycle, or will be quite a while between cycling. if you have a gauge set, you should have about 35 psi on the low side and 300 psi on the high side (estimates). you will cycle if the freon runs really low ( like 15 psi) or if it is way overfull and the pressure goes up to 400 psi.

motor off, you should have 100 psi. motor running , AC on, it will pull down to 35 psi as it pushes the freon to the opposite side. if it pulls much lower it will kick out. if you have 35 psi and it is kicking out, you may want to check the high side pressure, maybe it is kicking out on "high". there is an orifice tube between the high and low side. if the low is o.k., and the high is too high, then you dont have too much freon, you have a partly plugged orifice tube.

If you're reading 35/55 psi at the cycling limits, you probably need a new gauge (perhaps a cycling switch).

Correct cycling values are 22.5/45 psi.

It is very unlikely that you are kicking out due to the HIGH side pressure switch. You'd have to have the low side almost into vacuum for that to happen unless you were over charged, an improbably event except where a DIYer has been screwing with the charge level.

In any event, you are likely undercharged due to a leak in the pressurized system.

you really need to check the HP side to get a final answer to your problem. if the orifice is partly plugged then you will get way too much psi on the high side since it cant exapnd thru the hole and get back to the LP side. this is not an easy job, the freon would ned to be extracted, hose disassembled and tube removed, new installed, pull valcuum, then add the refrigerant back to ploler level.-----project is right, the dont happen by itself. since you have a 98, i can assume the guy befor you might have added a can of gas once or twice. he couldl add to much, or got contaominants during the fill that plugged the orifice.---------- only knowing the pressure will tell you.
