Alrighty, I purchased this for cheap with the check engine light on. It is a 1996 F150 Standard Cab 4x4 with 170,000 miles on it. I have replaced all of the sensors, redone all fittings and hoses, and had the entire engien pressure cleaned. The check engine light was on saying it was lean in bank one, and it wouldn't pass emissions. I am wondering if anyone has a solution or previous situations similar. I am thinking of replacing the ignition system in hopes that it is just firing bad or not enough to pass. The truck was ran hard before I got it but runs great still. If anyone can help me with this it would be greatly appreciated.
Clean the MAF element carefully with some brake cleaner or rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip. A dirty MAF is what usually causes this code. If it's not that check for vacuum leaks.
Sorry for my ignorance, but what is the MAF, and how would I get to it? Almost all of the lines are replaced and checked for vacuum leaks previously to me buying it.
MAF = Mass Air Flow. The mass airflow sensor is located in the air intake line. On my 96 F150 [302] its located right after the air cleaner box. The sensor hangs inside of an aluminum tube.
To remove the unit release the wiring harness that plugs into the side of it. Undo the clamps that hold it to the air cleaner box and the air hose. once removed look inside of the tube the sensor will be hanging in the middle. To clean it spray your cleaner on to it and wipe away with a q-tip.
By the way they do make special maf cleaner, not quite as harsh as alcohol or brake cleaner.
