Post Electric fan

anyone replaced their mechanical fan with an electric one?If so do you have a parts list? Is there an electric fan clutch that will work on a 88 7.3.

lots have tried but no-one that I can remember has been able to make it work when the truck is loaded or towing, just not enough air movement.

Stick with the factory Fan and Fan Clutch, they work unlike electric fans.

One of the problems is that an electric fan that would produce the same airflow as the mechanical fan would draw a "significant" amperage which really loads up your electrical system. Also, the "overall" electric installation is less efficient than the mechanical fan.

If the mechanical fan draws one (1) horsepower to turn it that equates to about 750 Watt which results in an Amp draw of about 62 Amps. You are talking huge wires, major wear and tear on your batteries and Altinator, wiring, etc.... Most of the electric fans available for gas powered cars won't work here as they do not produce enough air flow.

Bottom line, the mechanical Fan and clutch you got is the best and most efficient way.

Sebastian.

Hmm....that's interesting to know. I've thought about going to an electric fan myself, so I'm glad that I looked at this thread!!

On a side note, has anyone tried putting the lighter plastic fan from a later powerstroke on the 7.3 IDI? Just the weight alone would probably make more power & save some fuel...
