Hey 59 SHorty...I dont know if the Blue Angels decided if they were coming or not this year because of the accident a few months back. Anyway...who all is in WA, and when does all the good stuff go on? (Swap meets etc.) I just moved up here (transferred by the Navy) in March.
The cowl vent when opened directs copious amonts of fresh air into the cab. I drove cross country with Willard (my 49 F-1) in the late 70's in hot weather. I would not have wanrted to do the drive without it. I am now putting AC in Willard and like the cowl vent so well that I am keeping it. Usually if the vent has not been opened in a long tine a good dousing with PB Blaster and wire brushing of the mechanism from under the dash is in order before opening it. The gaskets that seal for rain usually need replacement.
I intenionally moved my underdash a/c about 1 1/2 inches to the right of center so I would still have access to the cowl vent. When it's not too hot out that is the best way to cool the cab!
Even though I am installing A/C in my 54, I'm keeping the cowl vent also. It's one of those things that seem to make the truck the classic it is. I also kept the wing windows.
When I had my previous '49, it was pretty far along when I bought it. It had been a desert truck in 29 Palms California. At that time (before I got smart) I was a big-shot in the Computer Industry.
So I'm running about 70 down the Freeway wearing my million dollar Suit and it's pretty hot. I decide to open my Cowl Vent...... I don't think it had ever been opened. I was blinded by dirt so bad I almost crashed. I was covered in a fine coating of powder and leaves from head to toe........
