Continuous spark knock problem

Ok, before I go to the dealer I'm gonna try the Techron idea you gave me paw paw, but i got a question....the TSB says you should drive at 3500 RPM or over for the first 2-3 miles....should I try to do that throughout the entire tank of gas I put the Techron in?? I mean try to accelerate as much as possible while driving w/that tank of gas getting the Rpm's at 3500 or over....I'm guessing so....but just wanted to check

Well I run mine between 3-3.5 for about 2-3 miles & it's enough to quiet it down for a while.

I get my opportunity going to & from the lake when I tug my Bass Tracker over the Blue Ridge Mountains. It's always quieter after that blow out tug over the mountains.

I would run the current tank down to about 1/8 then add a 20oz Techron Plus, fill up with Texcao or Chevron gas & run most of the treated tank out, with some good "blow it out" sessions tossed in after the Techron has had a chace to go to work.

Adding a 20oz of Techron is about 10X stronger than the addtive level in pump gas.

Spark knock... or not...

I may be speaking "out of school" but I've had a problem that sounds alot like knocking on my 4.0 and it was a bad timing chain tensioner. There's a TSB about this.

I don't know if the 3.0 has achain or belt, but I thought I'd add my $0.02

If you do the Techron Concentrate Plus. or Seafoam in the gas tank, along with the "blow it out" part of the Decarb TSB, be sure to let us know how it goes.

If it's better afterwards, I'd suspect carbon was at least part of the problem.

Seeing as how it didn't "ping" when you bought it & it only had 27K or so on it when purchased, I assume it has factory plugs in it. So about the only thing you've done thats questionable & might have led to the ping developing over time, is using mid grade fuel, which is higher octane than needed.

So if the decarb cures the ping, I'd go back to using 87 octane, along with a good blow it out session or two, on each tank & see if the ping will stay away.

If not, then maybe try going one heat range colder on the spark plugs & continue with a periodic decarb treatment & a regular "blow it out" session or two.

As I suggested above, make sure all the cooling system components are up to the task of keeping the engine at the specified temp range & you don't have any vacuum leaks, or a dirty MAF sensor.

Let us know how it goes.

In 2001, Rangers started getting the 4.0L Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC) engine which is a different animal than the earlier Overhead Valve (OHV) "pushrod" version of the 4.0L engine. The SOHCs have distinct timing chain assemblies and tensioners that are not found on the earlier 4.0Ls (nor on the 3.0L OHV engine used in the Ranger). These SOHC tensioners and assemblies are somewhat prone to premature wearing, causing a spark knock-like sound.

okay, I think I got the spark knock problem solved on my 3.0l ranger edge.....I threw in a bottle of the Techron and went to 87 octane gas instead of continuously running the 89......the first full tank of 87 I put into it after the techron it spark knocked more than ever....however, I kept running 87 in it and I took it out for a "decarb" session this morning and I don't hear it at all.....hopefully it stays that way (knock on wood), all I did was add the techron and ran the dog **** out of the truck....I would put the accelerator to the floor, getting the rpm's over 4 grand....whenever I would do that, you could really hear the knock in it when the rpm's got at 4 or over....tried it today and I couldn't hear anything....so, hopefully, if I stick w/the 87 octane and every once and a while put the hammer down a little bit on it, the spark knock will stay gone (knock on wood again)....oh, and all I've been using is Shell gas.....hope this helps others, and thanks for the advice

OK, good feedback, sounds like you may have found a recipe for decarbing a 3.0L!!!!!

I'd run most of this Techron treated tank out, along with daily blow it out sessions.

If you feel it was heavily carboned up, it might be a good idea to follow on with a second treatment, then do it again every 5K miles or so.

I'd also continue with a daily or so, blow it out session, like when getting on the interstate, ect, just to keep it cleaned out.

Might not be a bad idea to copy the decarbon TSB & put it in the truck, so you can prove to the the officer that your just doing as Ford commanded!!!!! lol

ok....wht the he**.....thought I had the spark knock problem figured but apparently I don't.....I ran the the techron w/some darn good "decarb" sessions....the second tank after the techron tank I took it out for some decarbin' and couldn't hear a thing....now, since this next fill up I can hear it again....not nearly as bad, can't hear it at all now like I did when I put the hammer down and got the rpm's over 4, but in the dead area....when I'm at about 45-50 mph and at about 1500 rpm's, and I lay on the gas just a little bit, to get the speed up slowly w/out kickin' up the rpm's....I still hear it...it's alot more quiet than what it was, but I can still hear it....so wht the heck is goin on here???

I agree - decarbonizing and cleaning the MAF sensor usually do the trick.

Well as indicated before, it could be a combination of things.

It seems to me, from your decarbon efforts & resuls so far, carbon depsits were/are part of the problem.

But some other things, listed above, if not just right, might be contributing to the problem also.

If the carbon deposits were heavy, you may need a second Techron decarb treatment, at the specified treat rate.
I noticed that AuoZone has a Techron rebate going, if your of a mind to do another treatment!!!!

If you do another Techron treatment, I'd run most of the Shell gas out, then at the pump add the Techron & fill it with a tank of Chevron, or Texaco gas, as they already have some Techron in them & with the added Techron, the treat rate will be 10X the pump gas rate.
Also the Techron won't be fighting whatever Shell has in their gas, so maybe it'll be more effective.

Make sure the EGR system is functioning properly. To test it, try accelerating in the RPM trouble range, when the engine is still cold & tell us if it still spark knocks.
