is there any way to remove the fan and water pump pulley without the "proper" tools? it is late and i dont have anywhere to go to get them. i wanted to finish this over night but am thinking i am SOL! help me please!
you need really big wrenches to get the fan off. i think its 1 7/8". i have heard of some people getting it off with a air chisel put that wouldnt be my first plan of attack though.
ok, you can do it, i have, i took my wrench, put it on the nut, then grabbed my 4lbs sledge, and whacked it a few times, came right off, used the same method to get it back on, remember, its got reversed threads, normal threads are righty tighty lefty loosey, these are righty loosey lefty tighty lol, please pardon my spelling, Dustin
A last resort is to take a long chisel and put it on the edge of the flat then smack it with a hammer. If you get lucky it will come loose on the first try. This is an old trick from my days of working on VWs.

i think someone may have tried that before....it is chewed up pretty good.
I was in the middle of no-where last year and my fan clutch went out. I was trying to remove it to drill and bolt it solid (to get me home) and no one seemed to have the proper tools. I ended up buying a small pipe wrench that was pretty narrow, but would open up to 2" to grab the nut. I also grabbed a cheater pipe to put on the handle of the wrench. To hold the pulley in place I took one of the bolts out of the water pump pulley, put it throught the eye of a piece of small chain that I had on hand, and put the bolt back in from the back-side of the water pump pulley. Then I secured the other end of the chain around the alternator mount. It worked just fine. It also worked to put my new fan clutch on when I got one when I got back home.
i got it as a loaner tool from autozone when I finished took them to work and had a friend make the wrenches I needed before returning them now I have my own set of fan wrenches
dual exhaust how did you drill and bolt fan clutch i know how to drill and bolt but did you go from the front or to the side of the unit i live out here in the mist of the hell hole or as everybody calls the armpit of the us so its hot and min is going out and i would just as make it solid as go buy a new one
I bought (3) grade 8 bolts that were long enough to go from the fin-side of the fan clutch all the way through to the backside. I removed (3) out of six of the fan to fan clutch bolts. I then drilled through the removed bolt locations and put the bolts in with the heads facing the radiator, nuts facing the water pump. Bolts were installed with locktite and lock washers. This bolted the clutch solid and affected fuel economy. It also sounded like a jet when the RPM's were high. But my over-heating stopped, I was able to get home without my engine being ruined. I installed a new clutch when I got home.
