i have a 1967 f-259, what year is best to install shoulder belts. i need to do this since i can not find older style child seats, my son is too big for his infant seat. his legs are getting too long. he can almost reach the foot pedels in the truck. (in a few more years anyway.)
Do you mean what year donor vehicle to get the belts out of? I'd go for an '80s or newer, can't say for sure exactly what year as I haven't really looked yet, though I've thought about converting to conventional shoulder/lap belts. The shoulder harness that was optional in a lot of '60s vehicles was a PITA two-piece affair that you could wear as just a lap belt or bring down the shoulder harness and plg it in as well, but I don't think it was a retractable. I haven't seen one in years but I sort of remember them. I'd look for something more modern that's retractable and adapt it.
My '68 has threaded holes with rubber plugs in them up by the top of the rear window, but I'm not sure that's the best location for the upper pully of a retractable setup since the belt needs to run straight down from the upper mount to the floor mounted take-up reel. But it needs to be solidly mounted too...something I need to look into, maybe I shoukld just do it and write up a tech article. Or you can if you want!

I put after-market retractable shoulder belts into my 1970 f250 in the late 80's. I mounted them where Dan mentioned there are two threaded holes in the upper back corners of the cab. I am a tall guy and they are still pretty high there. They work well, but on long trips they get irritating. I put a fake lambskin sleave you can buy at NAPA over it.
I've seen some in parts catalogs like Dennis Carpenter, LMC, NPD, and MAC.
I want to adapt a modern one that adjusts for height. My wife is 5' and would have a hard time with those belts.
You need to look a bit more for car seats...they're still made for just a lapbelt top hold them in (lapbelt snakes through the rear of the seat) then the seat has the harness incoprated into it. Try Costco, they have a pretty big selection.
Try this place: http://www.julianos.com/I have used there seat belt systems in both my 69 F250 and 56 Ranchwagon. Works great and gives a great peace of mind.
