Been looking at offing my 99 Tracker in favor of a Ranger for awhile now. So I have questions:
1. Yes, I did a forum search.
2. Because of its small size the Tracker gets tossed about easily by wind; natural wind, wind from me passing big rigs and trucks/ cars and vice versa. Is this a problem with the Ranger? They are nearly identical width wise, the Ranger just has a longer wheelbase.
3. I have found a 99 Ranger, 114k miles, I4 motor, 5 spsd. The 'internet' (auto.msn...website) claims 27 mpg highway for this motor, true or false? Any problem areas with this year and/or setup?
4. It's priced @ 5100 bucks and if its still there when I finally go looking to buy, I plan on talking them down, as kbb.com priced it around $3500.
5. I am interested in knowing general knowledge about Rangers that I should know about when I go 'shopping' at the end of July, hopefully.
Anybody want a Tracker?
I can't wait to get in a Ford again.
Thanks!
~BILL
my ranger doesnt get blown around and at 114K its prolly just broken in i have 150K on it and the only thing that went bad other than maintenance was the timing belt and the ac fan resistor. i dont think i get 27 mpg with mine its an automatic but i get very good gas mileage more than my caravan . prolly in the 20s tho. only problem area on this truck on a 2wd is the ball joints check the tire wear I love my truck
my gf has an '02 Grand Vitara, which is the same thing as a tracker, and it does blow around. It feels less stable than my '94 Wrangler did at highway speed. Under 45 the grand vitara handles awesome. In my ext cab 2wd mazda ranger, there is no blowing around, except with the fifth wheel hooked up. lol.
I have a 99 2wd reg cab 2.5 5spd 115k miles and i get 28mpg normal driving (not highway). I don't get blown around any more than in my 4dr blazer. I love the truck.
I own 4.0 SOHC Ranger and I belive there is no reason to have 4.0 engine in Ranger. 3.0V6 with manual tranny is the best choise. Think twice before U purchaise AWD version. AWD is less reliable and more expencive to maintaine
Agreed that the price seems really high for a high mileage 4 banger motor.
I have found plenty of reason to have the 4.0L though, for sure. If you use your truck as a truck you will appreciate having some power.
Pablo old boy, there's on'y 2 rangine motors in the U.S, THE 4.0 and 4 banger, the 3.0 is a boat anhor and better left to the French for the enduring friendship and loyalty heee hee!!!! Rangers are very stable, like a rock, I mean like a brick, "sorry", wrong truck. My son gets 24/30 with his 04 2.3 duratec and auto tranny.
That's what I thought when I ran it thru kbb.com. I can deal with 24/30 gas mileage, my Tracker doesn't get that on the highway. I agree, it handles great up until 45-50, then it gets tossed around like a kite.
Are there any advantages from year to another? I ask cause I don't know anything bout Rangers, just Broncos. Thanks.
I had a 99 like the one your looking at. Did a 2" lift on it and it really looked nice after that. I got $2000 for trade ( @130K) and was listed for $2900 at dealer
It was a great truck. I usually averaged 20-22MPG. It easily hauled the occasional 5000# (rated for like 1500#) I could get 24-26MPG but had to keep it at 65 or slower.
I have an '04 f150 SCrew now and get about 17MPG. I did get 20MPG on a couple tanks- a lot of HWY driving @ 65MPH
The only time I had the wind blow me around was once when I was pulling an enclosed trailer
If I wasn't married w/kids, I would still own the Ranger. U-joint went out @40k(replaced both and never looked back) plugs and wires @80k, brakes @100k. Other than that just just regular filter and fluid changes. If I had kept it, would have changed the timing belt (and nearby components like oil and coolant pump) and probably changed the clutch proactively. This truck is really easy to work on and would have done the work myself. I have no doubt that truck would go another 130K.
They're like women. Never take the first one that comes along. The seller obviously didn't do his homework. It's too high. You can get a new 07 reg cab 4 banger for less than 14k. Keep looking and mention the book value to the seller
