Well the other day my Speedometer/Odometer went dead, and now my 95 Eddie Bauer Bronco shifts up and down real hard. It has the E04D tranny. Anyhow after reading some forums on the internet I went and bought the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) which plugs into the rear differential. It was cheap and easy so I figured I would give it a try. Anyhow it didn't fix the problem at all. I get no engine codes for anything like this , only EGR codes. Bottom line is, the Speedo/Odometer is still dead, doesnt do anything, and the Overdrive light on the shifter keeps blinking when its in drive. The ABS light is not on because some people have asked me about that. The Bronco shifts real hard, especially in the lower gears, up and down. I am wondering if I need to change the dash cluster and is the PSOM module part of that cluster? Also I did smell a burning smell in the cab the other day right when the problem started to happen but it was as slight smell and I didn't think to much of it. I have checked on the fuses and their fine.
i have a 94 with similar issue. i can not locate the psom and i just cleaned off the rear sensor on the diff with no change. i will swing by ford tomorrow and get a new rear sensor and hope that helps.
Well the sensor was $28 and its easy to replace but it didn't fix it. I have bought a 92 Bronco instrument cluster off of Ebay and am waiting delivery on that. It said in the auction that it was good for 92-96 and I hope just putting it in fixes the problem. I hope I am assuming right that the PSOM is located inside the instrument cluster. I also hope that there is no difference between the PSOM on the 92 vs the 95. Said on there that it came out of an automatic Bronco with ABS which is what I have and the part looks identical. When I get the part we will see if that works. I will let ya'll know.

Sorry to tell you you need a 94-95 cluster for you truck . I won't mention names but I message a guy on eBay every time he list one . His response is he dosn't take returns but he still list them . the 93 has no air bag light as well as other differences, But the speedo part may work in yours. There is a post on differences . And what can be swapped to make them work.
Well thank God the guy on Ebay had a 0 next to his name and was unable to complete the sell of the 92 cluster because you are right. There are some differences in the cluster for the 92-93 Bronco's and I was told that it can be converted but there are other issues. Anyhow I did find a 94-95 Bronco Cluster on Ebay and it was way expensive, $140 w/ shipping but its on the way and I will post again after I have installed it whether or not it fixes the problem. I am getting really sick of fixing electrical problems on my 95 Eddie Bauer Bronco and am thinking of selling it. I sure do love that truck though. I wish there was a way to fix all the electrical failures. I was told that you can run a ground strap from the base of the distributer and supposedly this will take care of allot of electrical failures because the ground is bad or something. I don't know, seems too good to be true.
Never heard the ground strap idea. Shouldn't be much of a need since the ONLY thing inside the dizzy by that vintage is the PIP sensor. Even the TFI module is moved over to the drivers inner fender. And it sounds like it RUNS ok just has drivability issues.
With the PSOM issue, have you checked the MLPS for damage to it or the connector/wiring harness? A failed MLPS can also give you the symptoms you described. The VSS feeds information to the ECM and ABS computers but the signal goes THROUGH the MLPS so that the computers don't get erroneous readings when the transmission is in a non-moving gear.
i have this same issue. i suspect either the psom or mlps. Nice to see you back on the boards Greystreak.
do you have to dismantle the dash to get to the psom or can it be gotten to from under the dash? I have to replace my clock spring in the wheel as well so perhaps i can do both jobs at once.
The PSOM alas is buried inside the cluster and I have only been able to access it by yanking the cluster out. Sucks but I personally don't know any other way. The last time I had an issue like this I was replacing an E4OD. There is a "test" of sorts for the MLPS but it requires knowing the resistance values for each position of the sensor which i cannot find at the moment. I will look for them and try to post.
Ok, I located a 94-95 cluster on Ebay and it arrived this monday and it took me about 30 minutes to install the new cluster and it fixed the problem 100%. If anyone wants to know how to change it on the 95 Bronco and this probably goes for 94-95 F-150's as well, you just pop off the two trim pieces on each side of the steering wheel and there will be two screws under those pieces. Remove the screws with a 7mm nut driver or TORX screwdriver. Pull the shift lever all the way down. Usually in order to remove the headlight **** you push a small metal button back on the top of the switch , HOWEVER , You will not be able to reach it on the Bronco, so I just ripped the **** off and thank god it came right off. Further investigation looks as if you could stick a small screwdriver under the **** into a slot and release it somehow. Anyways, grab the whole black bezel section of the dash and give it a good tug and it will pop off, and you will have to just work it a bunch until you can get it off. You will have to unplug various switches on the dash like the 4 wheel drive plug and rear window plug. After you get the black bezel off there are four 7mm TORX screws again which hold the cluster in place, remove those and work the cluster out of the hole. Don't make the mistake I made and put the new cluster back in without at least cleaning the lens. The lens is easy to remove, has about 6-7 screws and I stuck mine back in dirty and now I would have to remove the whole thing again to clean it. You will have to first remove the small wire that attaches the shifter lever to the shift indicator in the cluster, this is pretty easy and it is obvious how to adjust and remove it. I did it with my fingers, but you might need a small long screwdriver. Anyhow as soon as I got the new cluster in , i turned on the truck and checked its operation before putting the dash back together. Good luck and thanx to everyone who gave me advice on this repair. Most stupid thing Ford has done, was making shifting dependent on something electronic built into the cluster, they should have just kept it based on vacuum. Just more crap to breakdown and strand you in the desert or on the beach. Something you should never build into an offroad vehicle. If anyone knows of a way to change the odometer let me know because my truck gained 15,000 miles with the new cluster.
Awesome to know. ive heard that the psom is located on the back of the cluster and can be removed. if this is the case i may buy a cluster just to see about removing the psom and installing onto my current cluster. I have my next 3 weekends plum full so it will be a bit before i can progress on this.
