I ended up getting a used license plate tub from the self service junk yard. I noticed that the handle Assembly cable retainer arm was pivoting.
To shore it up I took some of that wonder putty that turns to stone and re-enforced the cable retainer arm so that it cannot move. I let the putty dry then I re-installed the license plate tub. I took a deep breath and tried the handle..... The door opened like it was brand new!
I used modified modified bicycle brake cables. I had to modify the door linkage minor welding is involved. However I will post pics when released from active duty late Sept
I found a Door Cable Repair Kit for Ford Econoline, E-Series Vans. You can go to www.surgesurplus.com or GoDaddy Marketplace for these do-it-yourself parts.
I have not tried that. The Repair Kit that I was referring to is actually the two end connectors for the cables. These end pieces tend to deteriorate over time and in most cases the cables themselves are still ok.
