Work at a fleet shop w/ several E-350's and the all have something in common, breaking door latch cables. Whether it be the front door, side door, third door, or the rear doors they all do it. Ya I can get them from the local ford dealer but thats not cheap enough. I can even fix them myself w/ a tried and true method but there's the down time that goes with that. Has anyone found another aftermarket supplier of those door cables? Tried Dorman but they don't have any for the E series. Thanks.
Check the local junkyards, there are loads of low mileage conversion vans out there that people wrecked. Try clark's auto salvage in wabash indiana, he has a LOT of older ford vans.
Check with Clark's in Wabash, he'll ship whatever you want. He should give you a fair price too. We bought quite a bit of stuff from him when we lived there.
My 93 E350 has that broken cable problem. What is your "tried and true" method of fixing them? I bought the cable from a dealer & got the door panel off and wasn't sure how to tackle it.
Thanks,
Jim

Me also would like to know the method to fix those cables.
Thanks.
Anyone else know the tried-and-true method for fixing the door latch cables?
On mine, the steel cable and sheath are fine, it's the plastic end-retainer sleeve that is self-destructing due to age/heat. Once the plastic retainer cracks apart you can't open the door from that side.
I went to the ford parts place and they sold me a new latch assembly that has both cables on it for $50, and said the separate cables were listed for $54. Go figure.
They also said that the other doors' cables would fail, so I would like to know how to fix them. Someone mentioned the motorcycle shop, so perhaps I could try that.
i got so tired of climbing through the front to the back of the van. i went to the dealer with some vasiline and got it over with. i just got tired of messing with it. my $900 van is a $1700 van now. to everybody out there pay the $800 for 4 cables that cost less than $5 to make and get it over with. ford makes there money on parts not vehicles, making is something extra they do on the side.
I want to armor it because some punk theif broke the rear door abs plastic licence plate tub. It looks like they used a flathead screwdriver to pry up on the lower left corner near the lock until the plastic cracked. Lucky for me the door wont even open from the outside because of the cable issue. I can show you a pic if you want.
