hitch in get along.

on the way home last friday my 01 supercrew 5.4l had what i would describe as a spark miss. but no code (s). so i pulled the rear diff cover off and had a look around. kind a felt like the pinion lost a tooth. everything fine. now today (monday) after working great all weakend, hitch back worse tahn ever. tropped tranie pan. nothing un-usuall.
ok what i didn't mention was that the first hitch was after a very rainy few days, and today i washed the engine.
can the truck have a bad miss and still not set a code? im kinda at a loss. i thought that a code would be set if there was a spark miss. with out the code i went for the drive train.

todays miss was really only under load at lower rpms, all gears and reverse, idles fine and the miss seems to go away at higher rpm. i took it real easy to get home thinking that the tranie was on her way out.
oh well i needed to change the fluid any way

01 supercrew, 95000kms, very well maintained. please help

COPs (specifically the boots). They get wet and that's what happens often with no code for a long time. Pull them off one at a time and regrease them with dielectric grease. If any of the boots look cracked replace the boots. It's a pain but I had to do the same thing - a couple of mine even had rust on the contact springs. HTH.

has any one had any luck replaceing the cops with aftermarket ones like from summit?
thanks for the response . i thought for sure that a code would be set. but After a little research i found that a code isnt set until a 40% missfire occurs. one cylinder is only 12%. im not sure that i understand.

It has to miss 40% of the time on any cylinder to throw a code. So if one cylinder misses over 40% of the time, it will throw a code for that cylinder.
It is not recommended to wash these engines. Water gets in the plug pockets and shorts out the coils and burns them up pretty quick.
Pull them as mentioned above.

I got this set off ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.ca/NEW-IGNITION-COIL...QQcmdZViewItem

I've only used 3 of them (to replace the rusty coils), and mixed with the originals they have been perfect for almost a year now...

so i changed the tranie oil and filter, took her out for a run. no problem. but she seems to ride a little rougher, kida feels like the road has little bumps. then i come home and decide to take a cop off and see if that is the problem. took one off and went for a ride. rough idle, didnt have that before. rough low load drive, had that. good pick up and high rpms, had that. with one coil off completely no code.
so i drive around for a few minutes and come to realize that this is damn close to the exact feeling.
im ordering new coils.
probably from summit. i just dont trust ebay for electronics. but thanks for the link. its very interesting but i cant take a chance.
is this the way that they go, more under light load?

Mine would intermittently buck on hills around 1200rpm. Someone on this forum had mentioned you need the slight load to make the spark escape the boot and especially once the engine was good and warmed up. That got me investigating the COP's and the grease redo with the few that I changed cleared up the problem completely. BTW, I suspected converter chatter as the culprit but the tranny wasn't even an issue.
