Hello to all in Excursion land! I am in the process of moving up from a Expedition to an Excursion to be abe to tow my 30' TT with a little more capability. I have found an '03 gas Limited with everything I need except for the brake controler. In my Expedition there was a pig tail that I used to wire my electric brake controler to the plug under the dash. The Excusion I'm looking at doesn't have the plug under the dash. I found wires but no plug. To my knowlege, the previous owner never had a brake controler installed.
Is there anything special I need to do to be able to move my controler? Or will I need to have the dealer install fuses and relays to be abel to get the electric brakes to work?
The wires you found are just pass through wires provided by the factory so you can wire something up through the firewall.
Take your fuse panel cover off, look to the right side through the triangle opening. That is the plug there where you need to plug in your brake controller. It is prewired to the big plug in the rear. Mine was plug and play no other fuses or relays needed.
You need to get a pig tail. I bought a prodigy for my X as well as a pig tail from RV Wholesalers. To plug the pig tail in is PITA becuase it you need to open the fuse panel and the plug is on the right side, mounted on a cross member, behind the dash, basically behind the cubby hole. My fat hands had issues with this task but it was accomplished. Check out this link. I had the same question a few months ago.
maybe we could get that pic put in the TECH folder above?? This topic seems to come up often and would be easier to just point people to the tech folder. Just a thought.
Thanks guys, I really appreciate the info!!! It makes me feel better that all I have to do is unplug my controler out of the Expedition and plug it into the Excursion.
Hopefully I'll be on the road tomorrow and in the campsite by the weekend!
If you are unfamiliar with this sort of install I would highly reccomend having a dealer/licensed mechanic perform this install and I would also suggest spending the extra bucks and getting a digital controller. (the control is way better)
I had mine supplied and installed for approx. $225.00 all in.
The plugin from you Exped will probably plug in on th Excur.I know the on on my 04 F350 is the same as the one that was in my 01 Excur because all I did was unplug from one and plugged into the other. My 04 Exped. uses the same pigtail.
Once you find that plug you will be looking for a place to mount your controller. Take the funny "purse hook" out and install the brake controller box bracket in the existing hole -w- the factory bolts. The wires are almost long enough to reach from the factory 5 wire connector (i only used 4 as 1 is for illumination) to the controller. Put your wires in some protective shielding and it looks like a factory installation.
NOTE: check to make sure that your controller will work properly in the 20 degree upward angle. The Tekonsha ones do just fine.
ALSO: the connector IS the same in all Ford trucks EXCEPT the new 2006 or 2007 models with the newer oval plug.
The Ex is ready to go if your trailer light fuses are there. Also, factory trailer battery charge relay is there. Its OPTIONAL & not required for controller to work. Someone robbed mine for diagnostics at one time. it was in glove box.

Reason: addition of more information
Put the controler in last night (should have taken pictures). Could they put the plug in a tighter place?? I was about ready to ask the wife if she could twist her hands around backwards and upside down to get in there!!! Now all I need to do is hook the trailer up and adjust.
I tow a 35' TT and I use a Brake smart and Love it. I have a 03 X. The install was thae same fron the 350 to my X the look is sooo clean. no adjustments worked great straight out of the box. Check the site out http://www.bitware.com/5er/BrakeSmart.htm
Oh and the controller works in reverse give it a shot!
new question on the same topic, has anyone heard of this I have a 2000 X and just installed a brake controller but the guy at the trailer shop told me to make sure that I have some relay in place, he didn't know where it was or even where to start looking all he said is that I need to hook it up to my trailer, push in the emergency brake and see if the trailer tires lock up if not then I need some relay.. I am driving a long distance on Friday to pick up a trailer with a bobcat on it and don't want to run into any problems
